Your adventure begins as you arrive in South Africa, where transport will be arranged to collect you from Johannesburg Airport. It’s well connected to Europe and the rest of Africa, making your journey smooth and hassle-free. We will start our journey to the mountains early afternoon so we ask you to arrive before then. If you’re arriving a day early, we can suggest excellent accommodation options to ensure a relaxed start to your journey. 

For the duration of the trip, you’ll be based in Winterton, not far from Drakensberg National Park. This means you won’t have to carry all your belongings from place to place, and after each day of hiking, you’ll return to the comfort of a warm shower and a cosy bed. The Mnweni Trail is a beautiful and varied day hike that begins and ends at the Mnweni Cultural Centre near Bergville, offering a taste of the wild grandeur that defines the northern Drakensberg. It follows the Mnweni River valley toward the towering basalt cliffs of the escarpment, passing through open grasslands, rural villages, and crystal-clear streams.

The route gradually climbs deeper into the valley, with each bend revealing new views of the rugged peaks and dramatic buttresses that make this area so distinctive. Local herders and their livestock are a common sight along the way, adding a glimpse of traditional mountain life to the experience.

Most hikers turn around at the confluence of the Mnweni and Rockeries rivers or at one of the scenic pools beneath the cliffs, making this a full yet comfortable day on the trail. With its balance of natural beauty, cultural richness, and peaceful isolation, the Mnweni Trail is one of the most rewarding one-day hikes in the Drakensberg.

Champagne Peak (3,377 m) is one of the most striking summits in the Central Drakensberg and offers one of the most rewarding day hikes in the region for experienced hikers. The route combines steep climbs, high ridges, and breathtaking views of the surrounding amphitheatre-like valleys.

The trail begins in the Monk’s Cowl Nature Reserve, following the Sterkspruit and Keartland Pass area before joining the path toward Blind Man’s Corner. From there, it continues steeply up the Gray’s Pass Trail, a tough but scenic ascent that winds through grasslands and rocky slopes, with the towering cliffs of Cathkin Peak and Monk’s Cowl rising nearby.

Near the top of Gray’s Pass, hikers reach the escarpment plateau, where a short but steep climb leads to the summit of Champagne Peak. The views are spectacular, stretching across the Central Drakensberg toward Cathedral Peak and the distant Amphitheatre.

This is a demanding full-day hike best for fit and experienced hikers comfortable with long ascents and route finding. For those looking for a shorter option, hiking up to the top of Gray’s Pass and returning makes a slightly easier but equally scenic alternative.

One of the Drakensberg’s most iconic ascents, the Cathedral Peak hike is a challenging but spectacular day climb to one of the best viewpoints in the entire range. Starting from the Cathedral Peak Hotel, the route begins gently through grassy foothills and river valleys before rising steeply toward the basalt cliffs that dominate the skyline.

The trail passes the Doreen Falls and climbs via the Neptune Pools area, offering a refreshing stop before the serious ascent begins. As the path gains height, it becomes increasingly rugged, weaving through rocky gullies and over steep ridges that demand good fitness and sure footing. A short section of easy scrambling leads to the summit at 2,949 m, where the panorama stretches from the Mnweni area in the north to Champagne Castle and the Cathkin range in the south.

The descent follows the same route and can be tough on the knees, but the sense of accomplishment and the 360-degree mountain views make it one of South Africa’s most memorable single-day hikes. Clear weather, an early start, and good preparation are essential, as the trail is long, exposed, and remote once above the ridgelines.

A free day in Debark is a chance to slow down and get a feel for life in Ethiopia’s highlands. You might start by wandering through the town’s busy market, where farmers and herders bring in grain, vegetables, and livestock from surrounding villages, creating a colourful scene of trade and chatter. Spend time in one of the small cafés sampling traditional Ethiopian coffee, roasted and brewed to order, or try injera with local stews in a family-run restaurant. Outside town, short drives lead to rural villages where you can see terraced fields, traditional tukul houses, and meet friendly locals going about their daily work. For a cultural insight, visits can be arranged to community projects or schools, while those wanting to simply rest can enjoy the slower pace of town life and watch the highland light change over the surrounding escarpments. stunning destinations.

The Tugela Falls hike leads to the world’s tallest waterfall, plunging nearly a kilometre from the Amphitheatre escarpment in the northern Drakensberg. It’s one of South Africa’s most awe-inspiring day hikes, combining dramatic mountain scenery, lush valleys, and the unforgettable sight of the falls themselves.

The trail begins at Royal Natal National Park, following the Tugela Gorge Trail through forested slopes and along the Tugela River. The route is mostly gentle at first, crossing small footbridges and boulder-strewn sections, with the towering cliffs of the Amphitheatre growing ever closer. As you near the gorge, the path becomes rockier, requiring some light scrambling and stream crossings.

The trail ends at a narrow canyon where you can look up to see the cascading waters of Tugela Falls descending from the plateau far above. During the wet season, the flow is spectacular; even in drier months, the cliffs and rock formations make this a dramatic and rewarding hike.

The return follows the same route, with ever-changing views of the valley and surrounding peaks. With its balance of accessibility and grandeur, the Tugela Falls hike is a true highlight of the Drakensberg.

This walk blends mountain scenery with an authentic look at rural Zulu life in the central Drakensberg. Starting near the Didima or Mnweni Cultural Centre, the trail winds through grasslands and small subsistence farms where local families grow maize and keep goats. Along the way, you’ll pass traditional homesteads, round huts with thatched roofs, and herders moving cattle against the backdrop of the towering Drakensberg escarpment.

Local guides often lead these walks, sharing stories about Zulu traditions, medicinal plants, and daily life in the mountains. Some routes include visits to local craft cooperatives, a sangoma (traditional healer), or small village schools, where visitors can learn about the community’s connection to the land.

The return route follows easy footpaths and rural tracks back toward the starting point, with views of Cathedral Peak, the Bell, and the rolling foothills. It’s a relaxed, culturally rich hike that reveals the human side of the Drakensberg — a landscape shaped as much by its people as by its peaks.

After an incredible week exploring the wild beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains, it’s time to pack your bags and begin your journey onwards. Transport will be arranged to take you to Johannesberg Airport. It’s recommended not to book a flight before 5pm on the final day to give us time to get you back to the airport.
