The journey to the summit of Bobotov Kuk is one of the most rewarding hikes in Montenegro, offering an unforgettable blend of adventure and breathtaking scenery. This iconic peak, standing at 2,523 metres, is the highest in the Durmitor range and provides a thrilling challenge for hikers.

The day begins in Žabljak, from where the trail gradually ascends through alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers. As you gain height, the landscape transforms into a dramatic world of jagged limestone peaks and rocky outcrops. The views become increasingly spectacular, with the entire Durmitor massif stretching out before you.

The final approach to the summit is a thrilling scramble over rugged terrain, but the effort is more than worth it. Standing at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over the surrounding mountains, deep canyons, and shimmering glacial lakes. Keep an eye out for chamois navigating the cliffs and golden eagles soaring overhead, a reminder of the untouched wilderness that makes this place so special.

After the challenge of summiting Bobotov Kuk, today’s hike offers a more relaxed but equally breathtaking experience. The trail around Crno Jezero, or Black Lake, is one of the most scenic walks in Durmitor National Park, showcasing the pristine beauty of Montenegro’s largest glacial lake.

Starting near Žabljak, the path winds through towering pine forests, where the scent of fresh mountain air fills every breath. The trail is well-marked and relatively gentle, making it an ideal opportunity to take in the stunning surroundings at a leisurely pace. Wildflowers bloom in the meadows along the way, and the sound of birdsong and rustling trees adds to the peaceful atmosphere.

As you circle the lake, the views constantly shift, revealing dramatic reflections of Durmitor’s rugged peaks in the glassy water. The contrast between the deep greens of the forest, the clear blue of the lake, and the imposing grey cliffs creates an unforgettable scene.

This is a day to slow down, absorb the tranquillity of nature, and appreciate the magic of Montenegro’s wild landscapes. There will be time to relax by the lake before heading back to Žabljak, ready for the next adventure.

Today’s hike takes you to Curevac Viewpoint, one of the most awe-inspiring locations in Durmitor National Park. This relatively short but rewarding trek leads to a stunning vantage point overlooking the Tara River Canyon, the second deepest canyon in the world, carved by the turquoise waters of the Tara River over millions of years.

The trail begins near Žabljak, winding through open meadows and dense pine forests. As you gain elevation, the landscape opens up, revealing expansive views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The final stretch leads to the dramatic cliffs of Curevac, where the sheer scale of the canyon below is truly breathtaking. Standing at the edge, you’ll witness the Tara River snaking through the depths, surrounded by towering limestone walls that seem to stretch endlessly into the distance.

This hike is perfect for those who love spectacular viewpoints without the need for a full-day trek. After taking in the incredible scenery, the route descends back to Žabljak, giving you time to relax before the next adventure.

After several days of hiking through Montenegro’s wild landscapes, today is a chance to slow down, explore Žabljak at your own pace, or take a day trip to one of the country’s other stunning destinations.

Žabljak is the highest town in the Balkans and offers a peaceful retreat surrounded by the towering peaks of Durmitor National Park. Take a stroll through its charming streets, lined with traditional wooden chalets and small local shops, or simply relax and enjoy the fresh mountain air. If you’re in need of some rest, take the opportunity to catch up on sleep or soak up the sun in the garden.

For those eager to see more of Montenegro, a day trip to Kotor offers a completely different experience. This UNESCO-listed coastal town is famous for its medieval old town, narrow stone streets, and stunning views over the Bay of Kotor. Wander through the historic centre, explore the ancient city walls, or enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the waterfront. The contrast between the rugged mountains of Durmitor and the coastal charm of Kotor makes for a truly unique combination.

Whether you choose to unwind in Žabljak or explore more of Montenegro, today is all about making the most of your time in this incredible country before the next stage of your adventure.

Today’s adventure takes you deep into Durmitor National Park on a challenging yet rewarding trek to the Ice Cave (Ledena Pećina), one of the park’s most unique natural wonders. This hidden gem, tucked high in the mountains, offers an incredible contrast between the warm summer air outside and the icy formations within.

The trail begins in Žabljak, gradually ascending through dense pine forests before opening up to vast alpine meadows. As you climb higher, the terrain becomes more rugged, with rocky outcrops and exposed ridges offering breathtaking views of Durmitor’s jagged peaks and deep valleys. Along the way, keep an eye out for native wildlife, including agile chamois navigating the cliffs and golden eagles soaring overhead.

Reaching the Ice Cave feels like stepping into another world. Inside, glistening ice formations stretch from floor to ceiling, creating a surreal, otherworldly atmosphere. Even in the height of summer, the cave maintains its frozen beauty, making it a true hidden treasure of Durmitor.

After exploring the cave and taking in the incredible scenery, the hike back follows a different route, offering fresh perspectives on the dramatic landscapes of Montenegro’s highlands. This trek is a true highlight of the trip, providing an unforgettable blend of adventure, challenge, and natural wonder.

For the final hike of the trip, we take on Prutaš, one of Durmitor’s most visually striking peaks. Known for its distinctive vertical rock layers and rolling green slopes, Prutaš stands at 2,393 metres and offers some of the best panoramic views in the region.

The hike begins from the Dobri Do (Šarban) area, following a scenic route along the P14 mountain road. The trail starts gently, weaving through vast open valleys before reaching the Škrčko Ždrijelo pass at 2,114 metres. From here, the ascent becomes steeper, but every step is rewarded with increasingly dramatic views of the surrounding landscape.

As you reach the summit, the entire Durmitor massif unfolds before you. Bobotov Kuk stands tall in the distance, and below, the turquoise waters of the Škrčka lakes glisten in the glacial cirque. The vast, unspoilt wilderness stretching in every direction makes this one of the most awe-inspiring spots in Montenegro.

Due to the lack of water sources and shade along the route, it’s important to carry plenty of water and be prepared for changing mountain weather. The best time for this hike is between mid-June and mid-September when the trails are clear and conditions are most favourable.

After soaking in the incredible views, the descent follows the same route back, bringing an end to an unforgettable week of adventure in Montenegro’s stunning Durmitor National Park.
