Your adventure begins as you arrive in Montenegro, where transport will be arranged to collect you from the capital’s Podgorica Airport. It’s well connected to Europe, making your journey smooth and hassle-free. We will start our journey to the mountains in the late afternoon. If you arrive earlier you can store your luggage in the city centre and use the time to explore Podgorica.
To make the most of your trip, we recommend arriving in the morning or afternoon, giving you time to settle in and it’s a great opportunity to meet your fellow adventurers. If you’re arriving a day early, we can suggest excellent accommodation options to ensure a relaxed start to your journey.
For the duration of the trip, you’ll be based in Žabljak, right in the heart of Durmitor National Park. This means you won’t have to carry all your belongings from place to place, and after each day of hiking, you’ll return to the comfort of a warm shower and a cosy bed. Get ready for an unforgettable week exploring one of Europe’s most spectacular mountain landscapes.

A short 20-minute drive from Žabljak brings you to the trailhead for the Crvena Greda hike, one of Durmitor’s most scenic ridge walks. The trail climbs steadily through forest and meadows before opening onto the wide ridge of Crvena Greda, where sweeping views take in the Black Lake, the rugged peaks of Durmitor, and the Tara Canyon in the distance. Rated a comfortable 3 out of 5 for difficulty, the route offers a steady challenge without being overly technical. On the way back you follow a slightly different path that leads past Jablan Lake, a serene alpine tarn where you can rest your legs, enjoy a snack, or simply relax in the quiet mountain setting before heading back down to the start.

Today’s hike starts right from the village, with no need for transfers. The Three Lakes Walk is one of the most gentle yet rewarding trails in Durmitor National Park. The loop takes you through quiet pine forests, open meadows, and rocky glades, linking three of Durmitor’s most scenic glacial lakes; Zminje Jezero, Barno Jezero, and Crno Jezero (Black Lake). Each has its own distinct character, from mirror-like reflections to rugged alpine settings, creating a sense of variety throughout the hike. Along the way, you’ll enjoy wide views of the surrounding peaks while still staying on relatively easy terrain. The walk ends at Black Lake, where there is time to relax by the water, take a swim or stop at the lakeside café before returning.

The hike to Planinica is one of the most spectacular routes in Durmitor, leading to a panoramic plateau set high above the Black Lake basin. Starting about 20 minutes drive from town, the trail climbs through forest before breaking into alpine meadows and rocky glades with views of the surrounding peaks opening up at every turn.
The path continues upward past steep cliffs and eventually reaching the broad grassy expanse of Planinica. From here the views stretch across the Durmitor range, with unbelieveable views of Skrka Lake and Valley.
After taking in the summit plateau, the descent follows the same route back as all other paths can be dangerous and very technical.
After several days of hiking through Montenegro’s wild landscapes, today is a chance to slow down, explore Žabljak at your own pace, or take a day trip to one of the country’s other stunning destinations.
It also offers easy access to thrilling activities like rafting on the Tara River, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and Europe’s deepest canyon. From spring to early autumn, visitors can also enjoy canyoning in Nevidio Canyon, one of the most dramatic and narrow gorges in the region, as well as zip-lining, mountain biking, paragliding, and rock climbing in the surrounding peaks and valleys. With stunning alpine landscapes as the backdrop, Žabljak is a hub for adrenaline lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
For those eager to see more of Montenegro, a day trip to Kotor offers a completely different experience. This UNESCO-listed coastal town is famous for its medieval old town, narrow stone streets, and stunning views over the Bay of Kotor. Wander through the historic centre, explore the ancient city walls, or enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the waterfront. The contrast between the rugged mountains of Durmitor and the coastal charm of Kotor makes for a truly unique combination.
Whether you choose to unwind in Žabljak or explore more of Montenegro, today is all about making the most of your time in this incredible country before the next stage of your adventure.

The ascent of Savin Kuk (2,313 m) is one of the most accessible high-summit hikes in Durmitor, starting directly from the ski area above Žabljak. The trail climbs steeply at first, weaving up grassy slopes and rocky ridges with views quickly opening over the Black Lake basin below.
Higher up, the path follows a sharper ridge to reach the summit cross, where the panorama takes in Bobotov Kuk, the Tara Canyon, and the chain of Durmitor peaks stretching west. Despite the relatively short distance, the sustained climb and exposed upper section give the hike a demanding character.
The descent follows the same route back toward the ski area. On clear days this is one of the most rewarding outings in the park. There is also sometimes an option to come down with the cable car if you have tired legs.

Prutaš (2,393 m) is one of the most striking peaks in Durmitor, famous for its sweeping grassy ridges and dramatic layered cliffs. The hike begins from the Sedlo Pass on the high Durmitor road, immediately offering wide views across the surrounding mountains.
The trail climbs gradually at first through alpine meadows, before steepening on rocky zigzags toward the upper ridges. As height is gained, the panorama opens to reveal the Tara Canyon, the Škrka Lakes far below, and the serrated skyline of Bobotov Kuk.
From the broad summit ridge, the views are among the finest in the park, with the entire Durmitor range spread out in every direction. The return follows the same route back to Sedlo, completing one of the most rewarding summit hikes in Montenegro.
