Hiking in northern Tenerife in Spain takes you through lush volcanic landscapes shaped by forests, deep ravines, and dramatic coastal cliffs. Trails wind through the ancient laurel forests of Anaga Rural Park, where mist drifts through twisted trees and narrow valleys open toward the Atlantic. Along the way you pass terraced hillsides, quiet villages, and rugged black-sand coastlines beneath towering volcanic peaks. With its vivid greenery, ocean views, and wild volcanic terrain, hiking in northern Tenerife feels both adventurous and incredibly diverse.

Your adventure begins as you arrive in Tenerife, where transport will be arranged to collect you from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It’s well connected to Europe, making your journey smooth and hassle-free. The meeting point, where we will start our journey to the mountains is in the town centre. The transfer will leave at 4pm and takes around 30 minutes. If you arrive before this time there are several luggage storage places so you can use the time to explore Santa Cruz. If you’re arriving a day early, we can suggest excellent accommodation options to ensure a relaxed start to your journey.
For the duration of the trip, you’ll be based in Puerto de la Cruz, near the beach with a view of the surrounding nature. This means you won’t have to carry all your belongings from place to place, and after each day of hiking, you’ll return to the comfort of a warm shower and a cosy bed. Get ready for an unforgettable week exploring one of Europe’s most spectacular mountain landscapes.

This circular route explores the quiet trails of the Teno Mountains, beginning in the rural plateau of Teno Alto. The path winds through open farmland and traditional hamlets before climbing into pine forest and ridges with sweeping views.
The route descends toward the Bolico area, where old terraces and pastures speak of centuries of mountain farming. From here the trail continues into the valley of Las Portelas, with striking views of the surrounding ridges and ravines.
The return climbs gradually back toward Teno Alto, completing a varied circuit of forest, farmland, and mountain scenery. With its mix of cultural landscapes and panoramic viewpoints, this hike is one of the most rewarding ways to discover the rural character of the Teno range.

This route through the Anaga Mountains begins at Cruz del Carmen, where laurel forest paths lead into the heart of Tenerife’s oldest landscapes. The trail descends gradually under the dense canopy, with moss-covered trees and filtered light giving the forest a timeless feel.
Emerging into more open terrain, the path reaches the cave-house village of Chinamada, where traditional dwellings are built directly into the cliffs. From here, the views open over deep barrancos and the rugged northern coastline.
The hike continues along old paths to the hamlet of Carboneras, surrounded by terraced fields and steep ravines, before looping back toward Cruz del Carmen. Combining lush forest, cultural history, and dramatic scenery, this hike captures the essence of the Anaga range.

This route combines the quick cable car ascent to 3,555 m with a summit push to Teide’s 3,718 m peak, followed by a long descent on foot through the vast caldera. The climb from the cable car to the summit is steep and strenuous at altitude, but the reward is unmatched views over Tenerife, the Atlantic, and neighbouring islands.
Instead of returning by cable car, the trail descends past La Rambleta onto winding volcanic paths, dropping through lava flows and pumice fields with striking colours and surreal formations. The route continues via Montaña Blanca, where the landscape softens into rolling ash slopes before reaching the road at 2,350 m.
The descent is long and punishing on the knees but offers a full immersion in Teide’s volcanic landscapes, making it one of the most memorable ways to experience Spain’s highest mountain.

After several days of hiking through Tenerife’s dramatic volcanic landscapes, today is a chance to slow down and enjoy Puerto de la Cruz at your own pace, or take a short trip to one of the island’s other unforgettable experiences.
Another great option is a whale and dolphin watching excursion from the island’s south coast, where the deep waters between Tenerife and La Gomera are home to resident pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, and, at certain times of year, migrating species such as sperm and humpback whales. Seeing these majestic animals in their natural habitat, against the backdrop of Teide’s volcanic silhouette, is a breathtaking experience.
For those who prefer to keep their feet on land, a gastronomy tour offers the chance to discover Tenerife’s culinary traditions, from family-run bodegas producing volcanic wines to local markets overflowing with tropical fruit, artisan cheeses, and fresh seafood. Sampling specialties like wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce or gofio-based dishes is not just a taste of the island but a journey into its culture and history. Whether at sea or around the table, today is all about savoring the richness of Tenerife beyond its hiking trails.

The hike begins in the village of Igueste de San Andrés and climbs on steep stone paths out of the valley, with early views back toward Las Teresitas Beach and the blue Atlantic. The trail winds across ridges and descends through dramatic volcanic terrain shaped by cliffs and ravines.
After several ups and downs, the route arrives at Antequera, a remote sandy beach framed by sheer rock walls and turquoise water. With no road access, it feels like one of the island’s last hidden places.
From the beach, a boat transfer provides a scenic return along the coast to San Andrés, giving a unique perspective of the cliffs and valleys from the sea. This route blends mountain ridges, wild coastline, and a beach finale into one of Tenerife’s most memorable day hikes.

This hike begins in the village of Los Llanos near Santiago del Teide and explores the volcanic landscapes around Chinyero, the site of Tenerife’s last eruption in 1909. The trail climbs steadily through pine forest before opening onto black lava fields, where the dark rock contrasts sharply with the bright green of the trees.
The circular route around Chinyero passes old lava flows, twisted rock formations, and wide views toward Mount Teide and Pico Viejo. The barren landscape here shows the raw volcanic power that shaped the island.
After completing the loop, the path descends gradually toward Santiago del Teide, passing terraces and farmland before returning to Los Llanos. With its mix of forest, farmland, and striking volcanic terrain, this hike captures the wild variety of Tenerife’s western slopes.

After an incredible week exploring the wild beauty of Tenerife, it’s time to pack your bags and begin your journey onwards. Transport will be arranged to take you to Santa Cruz. It’s recommended not to book a flight before 3pm on the final day to give us time to get you back.
If you’re extending your stay, there are plenty of incredible places to explore beyond the mountains. We’d be happy to share recommendations to help you make the most of your time.
As you leave Puerto de la Cruz behind, you’ll take with you memories of volcanic peaks, ancient forests, black-sand beaches, and unforgettable adventures on one of Europe’s most spectacular islands. Until next time!

EXCELLENT Based on 79 reviews Posted on Google TH WWTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Well-designed and varied itinerary. We joined the first Sardinia tour with Garry, who accompanied the group throughout—clear attention to detail and strong collaboration with the local guide, Sergioooooooooooo. (Must pronounce his name in this way) The guide was knowledgeable and attentive, offering detailed insights during hikes while making sure everyone was comfortable. Accommodation was consistently good, and the traditional mountain shepherd dinner was a standout. I joined with a high school friend who flew across the Atlantic—worth it. The group bonded quickly despite different backgrounds. A strong choice if you want a hiking-focused trip with like-minded people.Posted on Google Chiao ChangTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Absolutely loved my first trip to Morocco through Trailmates Adventures. I’ve looked into other solo traveller group tours before but none ever ticked all the boxes until now. The entire trip felt like a hiking holiday with like minded friends - fun and interesting. Some friendships will last a long time, and some just shared moments. Great itinerary, well planned out, and adaptable depending on fitness levels. Communication was really good and straightforward, from both the organisers and the trustworthy local guides. Overall it was an incredible experience that exceeded expectations, and I am looking forward to booking my next trip. Our trip to Madeira was amazing. Trailmates Group organized a wonderful hike. This was our first group tour and our first hike ever, and now we'll definitely be going on more with this company. Firstly, the price was reasonable and the quality matched our expectations. Secondly, the tour was the perfect difficulty level and suitable for travelers of all fitness levels. The idea of traveling just for the hike was the most important thing for us, as we wanted to fully enjoy the hiking and nature. I'd also like to point out that Harry was always available, which gave us a sense of security. A huge thank you to our guide, Paolo – he's very friendly, has a clear itinerary, and does his job 100%. The other members of our group are wonderful, engaging people. We're so glad we met them, and they'll remain etched in our memories. Thank you, Trailmates, for Madeira, and we'll see you soon!Posted on Google Agnieszka JaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I liked the hikes in the Atlas Mountains and my fellow travellers in the group were great, too. I highly recommend it. :)Posted on Google Natasja HoexTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
