Hiking on Socotra in Yemen takes you through one of the most unique landscapes on Earth. Trails cross rocky plateaus, white sand dunes, and rugged mountains dotted with the island’s famous Dragon’s Blood Tree, whose umbrella-shaped canopy gives the landscape an otherworldly feel. Along the way, dramatic cliffs drop toward turquoise waters and quiet beaches along the Arabian Sea. With its rare plant life, raw desert terrain, and sense of isolation, hiking on Socotra feels surreal, wild, and completely unlike anywhere else in the world.

Your adventure begins as you arrive in Socotra, where transport will be arranged to collect you from the Airport. There is only one flight on departure day so you’ll be leaving Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at 11:00 and arriving on the island at 14:00. Flights can only be purchased visa a local agency so we will help you to arrange this. You will also need a multi entry Saudi eVisa which can be done easily online.
We will provide you with lunch and an afternoon excursion for a short walk in Ayhaft National Park and a refreshing swim in a natural pool.
For the duration of the trip, you’ll be based in Habido, the main town of Socotra. This means you won’t have to carry all your belongings from place to place, and after each day of hiking, you’ll return to the comfort of a warm shower and a cosy bed. Get ready for an unforgettable week exploring one of most unique and spectacular mountain landscapes.

The Homhil Plateau is one of the jewels of Socotra, home to rare dragon blood trees, bottle trees, and sweeping coastal views. The hike begins near Homhil village and climbs steadily on a stony path into the highlands, with the Arabian Sea gradually spreading out behind.
As the route ascends, the landscape transforms into groves of dragon blood trees with their umbrella-shaped crowns and desert roses clinging to rocky slopes. The highlight is a natural infinity pool at the plateau’s edge, where clear spring water collects above a vast backdrop of ocean and mountains.
The return follows the same route, with fresh perspectives over the coastline and valleys below. Blending unique flora, striking geology, and the chance to swim in a natural pool, this hike is among the most unforgettable experiences on Socotra.

This longer route begins near the Dixam Plateau and follows a rocky trail that climbs steadily toward Skand Peak (1,450 m). The ascent passes through wadis and slopes dotted with dragon blood trees and desert roses, showcasing Socotra’s unique flora.
After reaching the summit ridge of Skand, with its sweeping views over the Hagghier Mountains and the northern coastline, the trail continues along the high ridges. The extended section explores remote valleys and dramatic limestone outcrops, with constant panoramic views over cliffs and fertile plains below.
The return follows the ridge before dropping back toward the Dixam Plateau, completing a full mountain day. With its mix of challenging climbs, striking vegetation, and expansive ridgeline scenery, this extended hike captures the wild heart of Socotra.

Adonah Mountain rises from the Hagghier range in the heart of Socotra, offering one of the island’s most dramatic summit views. The trail begins from the Dixam Plateau and climbs steadily through rocky wadis, where dragon blood trees and frankincense dot the slopes.
The ascent grows steeper as the path winds into rugged highlands of limestone cliffs and sharp ridges. At the summit, the panorama opens across the Hagghier Mountains, with jagged peaks and deep valleys stretching to the Arabian Sea.
The descent follows the same trail back to the plateau, with changing perspectives of the forested wadis and terraced farmland below. With its demanding climb and unforgettable views, Adonah is one of the most rewarding mountain hikes on Socotra.

After several days of exploring Socotra’s wild trails, today is a chance to slow down and enjoy the island at an easier pace. You might spend the morning wandering through local villages, meeting friendly residents, and browsing small markets for handicrafts, incense, and traditional foods. Another great option is a trip to one of Socotra’s pristine beaches, such as Detwah Lagoon near Qalansiyah, where turquoise waters and white sand create one of the most idyllic spots in the Indian Ocean. The lagoon is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, home to rich marine life and migratory birds. Here you can swim, relax, or take a boat ride with local fishermen to nearby hidden coves and deserted islets. With its unique blend of raw beauty, biodiversity, and traditional culture, a rest day on Socotra offers just as much wonder as the hikes themselves.

The trail to Hoq Cave begins near the village of Terbak on Socotra’s northeast coast and climbs steadily on a rocky path above the coastal plain. Along the way, dragon blood trees, frankincense, and desert roses dot the slopes, while views open over the turquoise Arabian Sea.
At the cave entrance, a vast opening reveals a labyrinth of chambers stretching deep into the limestone cliffs. Inside, stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal formations fill the cool darkness, while ancient inscriptions highlight the site’s cultural and historical importance.
The return retraces the same path, with wide ocean views and the striking contrast of arid slopes and green wadis. With its blend of coastal scenery, rare plants, and a spectacular cave system, this hike is one of the most memorable on Socotra.

The trail through Ayhaft Canyon begins at the entrance and follows a freshwater stream into one of the greenest wadis on Socotra. Early on, tamarind, fig, and date palms provide shade while small waterfalls and clear pools invite refreshing pauses.
As the route continues deeper into the gorge, towering cliffs rise higher on both sides and the landscape becomes wilder. The vegetation gives way to dragon blood trees and desert roses clinging to the upper slopes, adding a distinctly Socotri character.
The return follows the same path along the canyon floor, with shifting light on the cliffs and new perspectives of the pools. With its blend of water, greenery, and dramatic rock walls, Ayhaft offers one of the most rewarding full-day walks on the island.

After an incredible week exploring the wild beauty of Socotra, it’s time to pack your bags and begin your journey onwards. Transport will be arranged to take you to the airport. The only flight departs Socotra at 14:45 and arrives in Jeddah at 19:10.

EXCELLENT Based on 79 reviews Posted on Google TH WWTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Well-designed and varied itinerary. We joined the first Sardinia tour with Garry, who accompanied the group throughout—clear attention to detail and strong collaboration with the local guide, Sergioooooooooooo. (Must pronounce his name in this way) The guide was knowledgeable and attentive, offering detailed insights during hikes while making sure everyone was comfortable. Accommodation was consistently good, and the traditional mountain shepherd dinner was a standout. I joined with a high school friend who flew across the Atlantic—worth it. The group bonded quickly despite different backgrounds. A strong choice if you want a hiking-focused trip with like-minded people.Posted on Google Chiao ChangTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Absolutely loved my first trip to Morocco through Trailmates Adventures. I’ve looked into other solo traveller group tours before but none ever ticked all the boxes until now. The entire trip felt like a hiking holiday with like minded friends - fun and interesting. Some friendships will last a long time, and some just shared moments. Great itinerary, well planned out, and adaptable depending on fitness levels. Communication was really good and straightforward, from both the organisers and the trustworthy local guides. Overall it was an incredible experience that exceeded expectations, and I am looking forward to booking my next trip. Our trip to Madeira was amazing. Trailmates Group organized a wonderful hike. This was our first group tour and our first hike ever, and now we'll definitely be going on more with this company. Firstly, the price was reasonable and the quality matched our expectations. Secondly, the tour was the perfect difficulty level and suitable for travelers of all fitness levels. The idea of traveling just for the hike was the most important thing for us, as we wanted to fully enjoy the hiking and nature. I'd also like to point out that Harry was always available, which gave us a sense of security. A huge thank you to our guide, Paolo – he's very friendly, has a clear itinerary, and does his job 100%. The other members of our group are wonderful, engaging people. We're so glad we met them, and they'll remain etched in our memories. Thank you, Trailmates, for Madeira, and we'll see you soon!Posted on Google Agnieszka JaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I liked the hikes in the Atlas Mountains and my fellow travellers in the group were great, too. I highly recommend it. :)Posted on Google Natasja HoexTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
