Hiking in Ladakh takes you through a stark, high-altitude desert where rugged mountains rise above vast valleys and winding rivers. Trails pass ancient monasteries perched on cliffs, remote villages, and sweeping plateaus framed by snow-capped peaks. With its thin mountain air, dramatic landscapes, and deep sense of solitude, hiking in Ladakh feels otherworldly, expansive, and profoundly peaceful.

Your adventure begins as you arrive in India, where transport will be arranged to collect you from Leh Airport. There are several flights a day from the capital, Delhi, which is well connected to Europe and Asia, making your journey smooth and hassle-free.
To make the most of your trip, we recommend arriving in the morning or afternoon, giving you time to settle in and it’s a great opportunity to meet your fellow adventurers. If you’re arriving a day early, we can suggest excellent accommodation options to ensure a relaxed start to your journey.
For the duration of the trip, you’ll be based in Leh, right in the heart of the mountains. This means you won’t have to carry all your belongings from place to place, and after each day of hiking, you’ll return to the comfort of a warm shower and a cosy bed. Get ready for an unforgettable week exploring one of Asia’s most spectacular mountain landscapes.

The Tar Village hike is a scenic and secluded route in Ladakh’s Sham Valley, leading to one of the region’s few road-less villages hidden deep among the mountains. It makes for a rewarding full-day walk that combines high-desert landscapes, a winding gorge, and the peaceful green fields of Tar itself.
The trail begins at Nurla Bridge, about 90 kilometers west of Leh on the Srinagar–Leh highway. From the bridge, a rocky path follows a small stream through a narrow canyon, where the sound of water contrasts with the silence of the dry cliffs above. The trail climbs gradually, twisting between ochre walls and small groves of poplar and willow trees that signal the presence of water.
After about two and a half hours, the gorge widens and the hidden oasis of Tar appears — a cluster of stone houses surrounded by barley fields, apricot trees, and terraces of green against the barren hillsides. The village feels timeless and quiet, offering a glimpse of traditional Ladakhi life far from the road.
Most hikers rest here for lunch before returning to Nurla along the same path, enjoying new views down the valley as the light shifts across the cliffs. The best season is from June to September, when the fields are vibrant and the weather clear. The steady 700-meter ascent at altitude makes it a satisfying challenge for those already acclimatized in Leh.

The Lassermo Meadows hike is a peaceful and less-traveled route in northern Ladakh, offering a mix of alpine valleys, yak pastures, and sweeping mountain views. It begins near Hunder village in the Nubra region and follows part of the old trail that once connected Nubra with the Indus Valley via the Lassermo La Pass.
The path climbs steadily from the edge of the valley through scattered juniper bushes and open meadows grazed by yaks and horses. As you ascend, the views open toward snow-dusted peaks and the winding Shyok River far below. Small streams cross the trail, and the air grows cooler as you approach the high summer pastures known as Lassermo Meadows, set beneath the ridge leading to the pass.
This is a quiet place to rest, surrounded by alpine grasslands, wildflowers, and herders’ stone shelters. On a clear day, you can see across the Nubra Valley toward the towering Karakoram Range. After lunch or a break in the meadows, the return follows the same path back down to Hunder, with long views over the broad desert valley.
The hike is best from July to early September, when the meadows are green and the trail snow-free. It’s a full but manageable day outing at moderate altitude, ideal for those who want a taste of Ladakh’s high mountain scenery without committing to a multi-day trek.

The Kongmoro La Pass is one of the highlights of the Markha Valley trek, crossing a high saddle that connects Nimaling Plateau with the village of Chuskyurmo. It’s a full-day ascent and descent through striking high-altitude terrain, combining sweeping valley views, colorful rock formations, and a deep sense of isolation typical of Ladakh’s inner Himalaya.
The trail begins off the road, a broad alpine plain dotted with yak herders’ tents and streams. The route climbs steadily up the valley, following cairns and faint tracks across scree and alpine grass. As you gain height, the colors of the mountains shift from brown and gold to deep red and purple, and behind you the Kang Yatse peak rises sharply against the sky.
Reaching Kongmoro La at roughly 5,300 meters, you’re greeted with vast views across the Zanskar Range and the distant ridges of the Himalaya. The pass is often marked with prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and the thin air and silence make it an unforgettable high-mountain moment.
The descent toward Chuskyurmo is steep at first, zigzagging down loose scree before easing into a wide valley of rock and sand. Most trekkers end the day at Chuskyurmo Camp, though it’s possible to continue farther down if time allows.
The crossing is best from mid-July to mid-September, when the trail is clear of snow and stream crossings are manageable. At this altitude, it’s a demanding day, but for those acclimatized in Markha Valley it’s one of Ladakh’s most rewarding and iconic passes.

A free day in and around Leh offers the perfect balance between gentle exploration and quiet acclimatization. You can spend the morning visiting some of the region’s most beautiful monasteries — Shey, Thiksey, and Hemis — each perched on ridges overlooking the Indus Valley. The drive between them is scenic, passing poplar-lined roads and small Ladakhi villages, and you can stop for butter tea or momos at a roadside café. Thiksey’s giant Maitreya Buddha is especially striking, while Hemis, hidden in a quiet side valley, feels serene and timeless. If you prefer to stay closer to town, visiting Leh Palace, Namgyal Tsemo Gompa, and Shanti Stupa provides panoramic views of the mountains and a glimpse into Ladakh’s history.
For a slower day, wander the lanes of Leh Old Town, browse the market for handicrafts, and relax at a rooftop café watching the light shift over the Stok Range. Those craving a short walk can head toward Sankar or Sabu villages for an easy countryside stroll among barley fields and white chortens. If you feel acclimatized and want something more adventurous, a drive up to Khardung La Pass offers breathtaking views across the snow peaks of the Nubra and Zanskar ranges. Whether you focus on monasteries, local life, or wide mountain views, a single free day around Leh gives a rich taste of Ladakh’s culture and landscapes without rushing the altitude.

The Monastery of Sham hike is a gentle yet rewarding trail through Ladakh’s lower valleys, linking a string of ancient monasteries, traditional villages, and irrigated green oases surrounded by barren mountains. Often called the Sham Valley or Apricot Valley trek, it’s one of the most accessible and scenic day walks near Leh, combining cultural immersion with classic Ladakhi landscapes.
The route usually begins near Likir Monastery, about 55 kilometers west of Leh, and follows old footpaths between the villages of Yangthang, Hemis Shukpachan, and Temisgam. The trail crosses small passes and dry ridges that open into lush valleys filled with barley fields, poplars, and apricot orchards. Along the way, whitewashed stupas and mani walls mark the path, and prayer flags flutter against the backdrop of ochre hills.
Hikers can visit several centuries-old monasteries, each distinct in setting and atmosphere — the hilltop Likir Gompa with its golden Buddha, the quiet temples of Hemis Shukpachan shaded by willows, and the terraced village of Temisgam, once a small royal seat. The walk is not strenuous, but the combination of altitude, sun, and uneven paths makes it a full, satisfying day.

The Sakti Village Lake View Hike follows a quiet trail above one of Ladakh’s most picturesque valleys, climbing from the green fields of Sakti to wide ridges overlooking the Indus Basin and the distant snow peaks beyond Chang La. The route blends village life, open desert slopes, and sweeping mountain views in a way that captures the calm rhythm of Ladakh’s landscape.
Starting from the edge of Sakti Village, the path rises gradually through small terraces and clusters of poplars before entering stony hills marked by chortens and prayer flags. The climb leads to a high ridge where the terrain opens into gentle meadows and scattered rocks, with long views across the valley. From here, a small lake shimmers below in the basin, reflecting the colors of the surrounding mountains.
The descent follows the same path, revealing shifting patterns of light and shadow across the cliffs and fields. The combination of quiet trails, striking views, and the sense of open space makes this hike a memorable way to experience the landscapes and tranquility of Ladakh’s high country.

After an incredible week exploring the wild beauty of Ladakh, it’s time to pack your bags and begin your journey onwards. Transport will be arranged to take you to Leh Airport. If you’re extending your stay, there are plenty of incredible places to explore beyond the mountains. We’d be happy to share recommendations to help you make the most of your time.

EXCELLENT Based on 79 reviews Posted on Google TH WWTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Well-designed and varied itinerary. We joined the first Sardinia tour with Garry, who accompanied the group throughout—clear attention to detail and strong collaboration with the local guide, Sergioooooooooooo. (Must pronounce his name in this way) The guide was knowledgeable and attentive, offering detailed insights during hikes while making sure everyone was comfortable. Accommodation was consistently good, and the traditional mountain shepherd dinner was a standout. I joined with a high school friend who flew across the Atlantic—worth it. The group bonded quickly despite different backgrounds. A strong choice if you want a hiking-focused trip with like-minded people.Posted on Google Chiao ChangTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Absolutely loved my first trip to Morocco through Trailmates Adventures. I’ve looked into other solo traveller group tours before but none ever ticked all the boxes until now. The entire trip felt like a hiking holiday with like minded friends - fun and interesting. Some friendships will last a long time, and some just shared moments. Great itinerary, well planned out, and adaptable depending on fitness levels. Communication was really good and straightforward, from both the organisers and the trustworthy local guides. Our trip to Madeira was amazing. Trailmates Group organized a wonderful hike. This was our first group tour and our first hike ever, and now we'll definitely be going on more with this company. Firstly, the price was reasonable and the quality matched our expectations. Secondly, the tour was the perfect difficulty level and suitable for travelers of all fitness levels. The idea of traveling just for the hike was the most important thing for us, as we wanted to fully enjoy the hiking and nature. I'd also like to point out that Harry was always available, which gave us a sense of security. A huge thank you to our guide, Paolo – he's very friendly, has a clear itinerary, and does his job 100%. The other members of our group are wonderful, engaging people. We're so glad we met them, and they'll remain etched in our memories. I liked the hikes in the Atlas Mountains and my fellow travellers in the group were great, too. I highly recommend it. :)Posted on Google Natasja HoexTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
