Hiking in Patagonia in Chile takes you through vast landscapes of turquoise lakes, glacier-fed rivers, and dramatic mountain towers. Trails wind through the rugged terrain of Torres del Paine National Park, where jagged granite peaks rise above golden grasslands and deep valleys. Along the way, powerful winds sweep across open plains while glaciers and waterfalls spill down from the mountains. With its immense scale, raw wilderness, and striking contrasts of rock, ice, and sky, hiking in Chilean Patagonia feels truly wild and unforgettable.

Your adventure begins as you arrive in Chile, where transport will be arranged to collect you from Puerto Natales. It’s well connected to Europe and the rest of Chile, making your journey smooth and hassle-free. The meeting point, where we will start our journey to the mountains is in the town of Puerto Natales. The transfer will leave at 3pm and takes around 1,5 hours. If you arrive before this time there are several luggage storage places so you can use the time to explore the town. If you’re arriving a day early, we can suggest excellent accommodation options to ensure a relaxed start to your journey.
For the duration of the trip, you’ll be based in Rio Serrano, right in the heart of lakes and mountains and just outside the national park. This means you won’t have to carry all your belongings from place to place, and after each day of hiking, you’ll return to the comfort of a warm shower and a cosy bed. Get ready for an unforgettable week exploring one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes.

This is the park’s most iconic day hike, climbing steadily through lenga forest and across windswept valleys before rising steeply over a rocky moraine to the base of the Paine Towers. The final viewpoint reveals three massive granite spires rising directly above a glacial lagoon, their sheer walls glowing in shifting Patagonian light. The scale feels immense and exposed, especially on windy days, and the contrast between turquoise water and vertical rock makes this one of South America’s most dramatic day hikes.

Starting from the shores of Lago Pehoé after the catamaran crossing, this route follows the western arm of the W circuit along Lago Grey. The trail undulates through open terrain with constant views of floating icebergs and the Southern Patagonian Ice Field beyond. As you approach the main viewpoint, the immense face of Grey Glacier fills the horizon, spilling down from a vast expanse of ice. The combination of wind, ice, and open space gives this hike a raw and powerful atmosphere.

This hike leads into the heart of the Paine massif, branching off from the main W route and climbing gradually into a dramatic hanging valley. The scenery shifts from lakeshore walking to forested slopes and eventually to a rocky amphitheater surrounded by towering granite walls and hanging glaciers. Avalanches can sometimes be heard echoing off the cliffs, adding to the sense of scale. It’s a balanced hike with changing terrain and constant mountain drama without the same relentless climb as the Towers.

A free day in Río Serrano is more about slowing down and soaking in the landscape than checking off sights. It’s quiet, scenic, and much calmer than staying inside the busier sectors of Torres del Paine.
Start with a slow morning along the Serrano River. The riverbanks offer wide views toward the Paine massif, and on clear days you can see the towers and Cuernos rising in the distance. It’s perfect for coffee with a view, photography, or just watching the changing light over the peaks.
You could take a scenic drive deeper into Torres del Paine without committing to a long hike. Stop at Lago Pehoé, Lago Grey beach, Salto Grande waterfall, or Laguna Amarga for viewpoints that require only short walks. Wildlife spotting is common along the roads, especially guanacos and occasionally foxes or condors.
If you want something more active but still non-hiking, horseback riding in the Serrano area is a great option. Riding across open Patagonian steppe with the mountains in the background feels classic and cinematic. Kayaking on the Serrano River or taking a boat excursion toward Grey Glacier is another memorable experience.
For a true rest day, many lodges in Río Serrano have panoramic lounges, fireplaces, and spa services. Sitting with a glass of wine while the Patagonian wind moves across the pampas is surprisingly satisfying. Sunsets can be especially beautiful here, with long golden light stretching across the plains and illuminating the peaks.
Río Serrano is about space and atmosphere. A rest day there works best when you lean into the quiet rather than trying to fill every hour.

Shorter but intense, this trail climbs steeply above Lago Grey through forest before breaking into open hillside with increasingly expansive views. From the summit ridge, you look out across Grey Glacier, the ice field, and the Paine massif from a completely different angle than the main trails. The panorama is wide and wild, with glaciers, lakes, and jagged peaks all visible at once. It’s a compact but high-reward ascent.

On the quieter eastern side of the park, this hike offers a very different perspective of the Towers. The terrain is more open and windswept, with big skies, steppe vegetation, and distant mountain views. From Laguna Azul, the granite spires rise sharply above the plains, often reflected in still water on calm mornings. Continuing toward Laguna Cebolla brings you closer to the base of the massif without heavy crowds. It feels spacious and remote, highlighting the contrast between Patagonian steppe and vertical granite peaks.

It’s time to pack your bags and move onwards. We arrange transport back to the airport so you can catch your flight home or continue to explore this majestical country. We recommend not booking a flight before 3pm to give us time to get you from the mountains. We have lots of recommendations if you’re going to spend more time in Chile.
