We will arrange transport to collect you from Santander or Bilbao Airports and take you to the accommodation. We will start our journey to the mountains in the late afternoon. If you arrive earlier you can store your luggage in the city centre and use the time to explore Bilbao or Santander. We can also recommend accommodation for the night before if you plan to arrive earlier. Arenas de Cabrales will be the base for the whole trip, which is great because you don’t need to carry all your stuff around and after a long day walking you know your warm shower and bed is awaiting you.

The Ruta del Cares follows a narrow trail carved into the cliffs of the Cares Gorge, linking the villages of Poncebos in Asturias and Caín in León. The path winds high above the turquoise Cares River, crossing stone bridges and short tunnels cut through the limestone.
The hike begins with a steady climb from Poncebos, soon opening to wide views of towering peaks and sheer canyon walls. The middle section contours dramatically along the gorge, with the river far below and waterfalls spilling from hidden side valleys.
Near Caín, the gorge narrows to its most spectacular point, where the trail passes between vertical walls rising hundreds of metres overhead. After a rest by the river, the return follows the same route through the gorge, revealing new perspectives on the cliffs and summits of the Picos de Europa.

This circular route explores the famous glacial lakes of Covadonga, one of the most scenic areas in the Picos de Europa. Starting near the visitor centre by Lake Enol, the trail winds through alpine meadows and pastures dotted with grazing cattle before reaching the second lake, Ercina, framed by sharp limestone peaks.
From Ercina, the path climbs gently to the Mirador de Entrelagos, where both lakes can be seen together against a backdrop of rugged mountains. Beyond the viewpoint, the route continues through karst terrain toward the old Buferrera mining area, where remnants of tunnels and machinery hint at the region’s industrial past.
The loop then descends through rolling green hills back to Lake Enol, with sweeping views across the western massif of the Picos de Europa. Clear weather brings vivid reflections on the lake surfaces, while clouds and mist give the landscape a mysterious beauty.

This demanding circular route leads to the summit of Peña Main (1,617 m), one of the most striking viewpoints in the western Picos de Europa.
Starting from the Mirador de Panderrueda, the trail climbs steeply through beech forest before emerging onto open alpine pastures with sweeping views of the Valdeón Valley. The ascent continues along rocky slopes and scattered limestone outcrops toward the summit ridge.
The final push follows a rugged crest, occasionally steep and uneven, before reaching the broad summit crowned with a cairn and spectacular 360° panoramas — the Cares Gorge to the north, the high peaks of the central massif to the east, and the Cantabrian coast on clear days.
The descent loops back via the Collado de Dobres and gentle meadows dotted with grazing cattle, completing a route that captures the wild beauty and variety of the Picos landscape.

A chance to explore the city, unwind, or embark on another adventure. Bilbao, nestled in the heart of Spain’s Basque Country, offers a captivating blend of modern innovation and deep-rooted tradition. Wander through the Casco Viejo (Old Town), where cobbled streets, historic buildings, and lively pintxos bars invite you to savor Basque culinary delights like txangurro (spider crab) and bacalao a la vizcaína (cod in red pepper sauce). Discover Bilbao’s cultural heartbeat at the Guggenheim Museum, a striking architectural masterpiece housing world-class contemporary art, or explore the city’s maritime legacy at the Ría de Bilbao waterfront. For those craving the outdoors, Bilbao serves as a gateway to coastal hikes along the Bay of Biscay, the dramatic cliffs of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, or the serene landscapes of Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. Whether you’re indulging in fine dining, soaking in panoramic views from Mount Artxanda, or simply enjoying the city’s vibrant atmosphere, Bilbao seamlessly blends urban charm with nature, making it an unforgettable destination in northern Spain.

This scenic circular hike explores the upper Cabrales Valley and the ridge of the Sierra de Juan Robre, offering superb views across the eastern Picos de Europa.
The route begins near Arenas de Cabrales and climbs steadily through oak and chestnut woodland before reaching open pastures and limestone slopes. As height is gained, the views widen over the Cares Valley and the jagged peaks of the central massif.
The path follows the undulating crest of the Sierra de Juan Robre, a natural balcony overlooking both the Cabrales Valley and the green hills of eastern Asturias. Occasional steep sections and rocky footing add challenge but reward with uninterrupted mountain panoramas.
The descent passes through tranquil grazing meadows and scattered hamlets, returning by rural tracks to the valley floor. In clear weather, the contrasts of green valleys and grey limestone ridges make this one of the most picturesque medium-level hikes in the region.

One of the most iconic hikes in the Picos de Europa, this route leads to the base of the legendary Naranjo de Bulnes (Picu Urriellu, 2,519 m) — the striking limestone spire that dominates the central massif.
Starting from the mountain village of Sotres, the trail climbs gradually along the track toward Pandébano Col, where the first views of the Picu appear. From here, the route steepens as it winds through rocky high pastures and karst terrain, with the great wall of Urriellu growing larger at every turn.
The final stretch ascends a stony path to the Refugio de Urriellu, nestled directly beneath the towering north face — a dramatic spot surrounded by sheer limestone cliffs. After soaking in the mountain scenery, most hikers return by the same route, though experienced trekkers can link it with other high routes across the central massif.
In clear weather, the hike offers unforgettable views and a sense of grandeur unmatched elsewhere in the Picos.

It’s time to pack your bags and head back to the town. We arrange transport back to the airport so you can catch your flight home or continue to explore this magical region. We have lots of recommendations if you’re going to spend more time in Spain.

EXCELLENT Based on 44 reviews Posted on Maja De BritoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I joined the Scotland hiking trip. A top notch, 5-star experience from planning stage to saying goodbye with the group and the guides. Garry was immensly helpful with bits and pieces of information that made organising my traveling to Scotland and arriving to the meeting place a smooth and pleasant experience. Communication throught Whatsapp was effortless and always with a very quick reponse. I felt everything was taken care of, with a ready and helpful response for every inquiry or need. The hikes themselves were wonderful, both guides were very flexible and adapted to our level of fitness, but also our interests. Very grateful that we had the opportunity to see some off the beaten track routes. I have several food intolerances and this was never a limitation on this trip. There were always options, be it through the possibility of preparing my own food as well as having many choices eating out. I've been recommending their hikes to my friends and will definitely join for other destinations.Posted on AlinTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had an incredible experience with this hiking tour company in Montenegro, which I found through Instagram. The itinerary was clear and well-planned, with no last-minute changes—everything ran smoothly. Our guide, Vera, was fantastic. She not only supported us throughout the hike but also helped with local touring advice and even assisted in booking activities with local guides. Her knowledge and kindness made a big difference. The tour was conducted in a sustainable and budget-friendly way, without compromising on quality. We also received great tips on local cuisine, places to explore, and shopping. I’m already planning my next hike with them. If you’re a hiking enthusiast looking for a trusted guide, this is the company to go with!Posted on Charlotte RobertsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It was honestly fantastic and the little additions like the meal with the driver and the local film at cinema Dede really added to the experience. Plus I was so lucky to have such a great group to share the experience with. I'd definitely look at another tour with Trailmates.Posted on Bty btyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had such a great time in Montenegro. I felt very well looked after; everything was perfectly organized, and I truly appreciated the warm and friendly atmosphere that was created by our guides and group. 🥰🫶🏻 I’ll happily recommend Trailmates and I am already planning the next trip.Posted on Lian DelpeutTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I wanted to review this trip as my first experience of group travelling, it had been an incredible experience from start to finish, it was so well organised at every step with support provided when required. It was so nice to be in a group of like minded people making new connections even sharing accommodation which I was sceptical about in the beginning, but was totally comfortable from the start. Our guide Vera was incredible sharing so much information on the area always with a huge smile and encouragement when needed. As well as going the extra mile to help people organise out other activities outside of hiking such as spa treatments and water activities. The hikes themselves were incredible with stunning diverse scenery. Watching wildlife such as mountain goats was a personal highlight. The hikes were challenging with some small technical sections which made it more enjoyable. I would highly recommend this experience. As someone who enjoys exploring nature, but doesn’t know many people who are interested in doing so, I’m glad I found Trailmates Adventures, because I’m not comfortable hiking on my own on challenging routes. What I liked/went well: - I did not have to coordinate airport transfer on my own. I just had to arrive - The accommodation is close to the national park, supermarket, restaurants - Not having to bring my luggage around during the hikes - Option to have a private room for an additional cost. I also liked having a kitchen, especially the fridge, although I understand that it wasn’t initially the plan according to the description on the website - Our guide, Vera is a local and she shared with us some history and background of the places along the way. She also paced the hikes well and supported us on challenging points - Option to go rafting in the Tara River during the break - Meeting inspiring people from different backgrounds - Garry (Trailmates Adventures) is very responsive and helpful in the chats - Amazing views, mountain goats, dogs, swimming in the lake! What I underestimated and might help people who are similar to me: - For context, I mostly do strength training and short bursts of high intensity, and not a lot of endurance activities. My stamina definitely got challenged, but I managed to push myself to the summits in the end. I particularly found it difficult to hike down steeper, exposed declines due to fear and inexperience. I also did not know that there would be some light scrambling involved, but the former was more of the issue for me than the latter. Nevertheless, I was in a supportive and safe environment! - If you find that you’re too tired, you can always bail on going to the summit. I was just too stubborn to do that :D Overall, it was an eye opening experience for me, and I really enjoyed it! I’m looking forward to the next trip!Posted on Katie KissTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Hi Garry, Oh, I can not describe in words what a wonderful week I had in Montenegro! Thank you for the great organisation from the first moment till the last! The group has been so lovely, we had great fun every day, and Vera was truly amazing! She is a gem with her kind nature. She guided us through our highs and lows and assisted with activities for the day off! We all loved her! Our accommodation was great, and the lady communicated well and assisted with fresh towels, etc, whenever we needed. Thanks again for the experience, and I am looking forward to coming for another trip!Posted on HaweaberryTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I joined Trailmates Adventures for their hiking trip to Madeira and had an amazing experience. The hike selection was great, the organization smooth, and everything felt well thought through. What really made it special, though, were the people – such a fun and supportive group that turned the trip into something unforgettable.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
