The Petra Backdoor Hike is an alternative and less crowded way to enter Petra, bypassing the main entrance and the long, crowded walk through the Siq. Starting from Little Petra, the trail winds through stunning sandstone landscapes and offers a mix of sandy paths, rock scrambles, and carved staircases. It leads directly to the Monastery (Ad Deir)—one of Petra’s most breathtaking monuments. Unlike the main route, this hike provides a peaceful and scenic approach, with views of desert valleys and hidden Nabatean ruins along the way. The backdoor route is a fantastic way to explore Petra while avoiding the usual crowds.

petra

With the 3-day Petra pass it will allow you to do the Petra hikes either side of the free day and then also enter again in your free time if you wish. It’s well worth it! Another great option is to head to the Dead Sea for a float in the water.

Visiting Petra, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is an unforgettable experience that transports travelers back to the era of the Nabateans, who carved this breathtaking city into Jordan’s rose-red sandstone cliffs over 2,000 years ago. The journey begins at the Siq, a narrow canyon that leads to the magnificent Treasury (Al-Khazneh), Petra’s most iconic monument. Beyond the Treasury, Petra unfolds into a vast archaeological wonderland, featuring the Royal Tombs, the Colonnaded Street, the Great Temple, and the awe-inspiring Monastery (Ad Deir)—which can be reached via an exhilarating climb of 800 steps. For adventurers, trails like the Al-Khubtha Viewpoint and the Petra Backdoor Hike offer incredible perspectives and fewer crowds. Whether exploring Petra’s ancient ruins by daylight or witnessing its magic under the soft glow of candles at Petra by Night, this UNESCO World Heritage Site leaves visitors with a deep appreciation for its history, ingenuity, and timeless beauty. With a mix of adventure, culture, and history, Petra is a must-visit destination that exceeds all expectations.

Distance – 9.4km, Elevation – 345m, Time – 5 Hours

The Al-Khubtha Trail is one of the most rewarding hikes in Petra, offering the best panoramic view of the iconic Treasury (Al-Khazneh) from above. The trail begins near the Royal Tombs and involves a challenging ascent through rocky terrain and steep steps. This hike is a round trip,  famous for leading to the famous high viewpoint overlooking the Treasury, a scene often captured in postcards. The journey is tough but well worth the effort, offering incredible photo opportunities and a quieter experience away from the crowds below.

ras

Distance – 11.7km, Elevation – 702m, Time – 5 Hours

For those looking for true wilderness and solitude, the Ras Al-Feid Trail is one of Jordan’s most remote and challenging hikes. This  trek leads through dramatic canyons, rugged mountains, and hidden Nabatean ruins. Unlike more popular routes, Ras Al-Feid offers a completely off-the-grid experience, with minimal crowds and a sense of deep isolation. The trail, starting near Dana Biosphere Reserve, requires navigation skills and is best done with a guide due to its challenging terrain and unmarked paths. The reward is breathtaking canyon views, a sense of total wilderness, and the possibility of encountering Bedouin herders along the way. This hike is a must for adventurers who want to experience Jordan’s rugged beauty away from the tourist trails.

amman

After an unforgettable week exploring the mountains, it’s time to pack your bags and begin the journey back to the city. Transport can be arranged to Amman or Aqaba, making it easy to catch your flight home or continue exploring this incredible country.

Most taxis and shared transfers leave in the morning, offering a scenic drive back through the valleys and mountain passes. If you’re planning to extend your stay in Jordan, there are plenty of incredible places to visit. We’d be happy to provide recommendations to help you make the most of your time.

As you leave Wadi Musa behind, you’ll take with you memories of towering peaks, ancient villages, and the thrill of adventure in one of the most untouched regions. Until next time!

This trip was absolutely incredible! The hikes around Wadi Musa took us through some of the most stunning and diverse landscapes in Jordan, from the hidden canyons of Wadi Ghuweir to the sweeping desert valleys of Wadi Dana. Every trail offered something unique—whether it was the dramatic views from the Al-Khubtha viewpoint, the sense of discovery along the Petra Backdoor Hike, or the solitude and raw beauty of Ras Al-Feid. The itinerary was perfectly designed to highlight the best of the region, balancing adventure with moments of quiet awe in Petra’s ancient ruins. The guides were fantastic—knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to share insights about the history and culture of the area. The hikes were challenging but incredibly rewarding, with breathtaking views at every turn. Will definitely hike again with Trailmates in a new locatio.
