We will arrange transport to collect you from Muscat Airport and take you to the accommodation in Al Hamra, which is about a 2,5 hour drive. We will start our journey to the mountains in the afternoon (around 2pm). If you arrive earlier you can store your luggage in the city centre and use the time to explore Muscat. We can also recommend accommodation for the night before if you plan to arrive earlier. Al Hamra will be the base for the whole trip, which is great because you don’t need to carry all your stuff around and after a long day walking you know your warm shower and bed is awaiting you.

The Wadi Ghul walk begins at the mouth of the gorge and follows the valley track past the terraces and the abandoned village. After exploring the ruins, the path continues deeper into the canyon beneath towering walls of limestone, where the gorge narrows and the sense of scale intensifies.
The extension adds rugged terrain and some rock-hopping sections and small ladders and ledges, but the reward is a more immersive experience of Oman’s “Grand Canyon,” with dramatic cliffs, scattered caves, and occasional small springs feeding pockets of greenery. When you reach the final pool there is a magical cave where you can take a swim. After lunch in the cave we then follow the same path back.

Part of Oman’s Al Hajar range, Jebel Akhdar is famed for its terraced villages, rose gardens, and dramatic wadis perched high above the plains. The hike follows ancient paths linking traditional settlements, where stone houses cling to cliffs and falaj channels water orchards of pomegranates, apricots, and almonds.
Trails traverse high plateaus and canyon edges with sweeping views across deep gorges, before dropping into fertile terraces scented with roses in spring. The mix of cultural heritage and mountain scenery makes Jebel Akhdar one of Oman’s most rewarding day hikes.
Many variations exist, from village-to-village loops to longer ridge routes, all offering a glimpse into life on the “Green Mountain.”

Known as the “Mountain of the Sun,” Jebel Shams is Oman’s highest peak at just over 3,000 m. The summit trail begins near the rim of Wadi Ghul and follows cairned paths across rocky plateaus, scree slopes, and rugged ridges.
The ascent gradually reveals vast panoramas over the Grand Canyon of Arabia, with vertical limestone cliffs plunging more than a kilometre below. The upper sections are exposed and demanding, but the reward is a breathtaking 360° view stretching across the Al Hajar range and deep into the desert.
The return retraces the same path, making for a full-day mountain adventure that combines physical challenge with unforgettable scenery.
There is also an option for some people to do an alternative hike on the Jebel Shams balcony which is 6km and takes around 3-4 hours.

A chance to explore, unwind, or discover something new. Nestled at the foot of the towering Al Hajar Mountains, Al Hamra offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and relaxation for those looking to take a break from hiking. Wander through the old town’s maze of traditional mudbrick houses, one of Oman’s best-preserved historical villages, where time seems to stand still. Visit the Bait Al Safah Museum, where you can experience Omani traditions firsthand, from coffee-making to pottery.
For a more relaxed experience, take a short drive to Jabreen Castle, one of Oman’s most beautiful and well-preserved forts, offering incredible views and a glimpse into the country’s rich past. Alternatively, explore the bustling souq in nearby Nizwa, where you can shop for handcrafted silver, pottery, and local dates. If you’d rather unwind, enjoy a peaceful afternoon at a traditional Omani guesthouse with fresh dates, coffee, and stunning mountain views.

Snake Canyon, known locally as Wadi Bani Awf, is one of Oman’s most dramatic gorge adventures. The route follows a narrow chasm cut deep into the limestone, where vertical walls tower above and the canyon floor twists tightly from one bend to the next.
The hike involves scrambling over boulders, wading through pools, and navigating waterfalls, with short abseils or jumps required in places. The canyon’s name becomes clear as the route snakes between rock walls, often only a few metres wide, before opening into wider sections with clear pools and sunlit cliffs.
The exit climbs out of the gorge to rejoin the road in Wadi Bani Awf, completing an unforgettable journey through one of Oman’s most striking natural features.

Linking two of Oman’s most picturesque mountain villages, this trail begins in the hidden settlement of Balad Sayt, with its palm groves and terraced fields surrounded by sheer cliffs. The path climbs steeply out of the valley on ancient donkey tracks, winding across rugged slopes and through remote wadis.
High above the canyons of Wadi Bani Awf, the route offers sweeping views of jagged limestone peaks and traditional stone hamlets perched on ridgelines. The final descent brings you into Misfat al-Abriyeen, famous for its mud-brick houses, date plantations, and intricate falaj irrigation channels.
This is a demanding but rewarding point-to-point trek that blends cultural history with the wild beauty of the Hajar Mountains.
For those wanting an easier day there is an option to walk unguided from the accommodation to the beautiful village of Misfat al-Abriyeen. No need for an early start and you can join the others for the transfer back from the village at 6pm.

It’s time to pack your bags and head back to Muscat. We arrange transport back to the airport so you can catch your flight home or continue to explore this majestical country. It’s better to book flights after 3pm so we have time to get you back to the airport from the mountains. We will also do one drop off in the centre right after the airport where you can leave your bags again. We have lots of recommendations if you’re going to spend more time in Oman.
Please note: The itinerary may be changed due to weather or trail closures. Your safety is always our upmost priority. Your local guide will always keep you updated on what’s coming the next day and if there are any changes.
EXCELLENT Based on 52 reviews Posted on Sarah GTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I joined the Oman hiking trip and it was a great experience! The program was well structured, with an amazing international group with a good age mix. The accommodation felt very authentic and each day offered different landscapes and nature, so every hike felt unique. It was my first trip with Trailmates and I can highly recommend!Posted on R. I was looking for a mix of genuine adventure and a great community, and Trailmates delivered on both. The group was incredibly welcoming. It felt less like a formal tour and more like a trip with a group of friends. We didn't just see the mountains, we experienced Omani hospitality and authentic local food. Everything was well-organized. It was an adventure with an amazing group of people!Posted on Ruben VlekTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Just returned from a great week in Oman! It was one of the few really authentic trips which I made, and the first with Trailmatesadventures. I liked the mixed group (32-62 yrs) of inspiring people. The whole trip was well organized, but with enough room for flexibility (e.g. alternative hikes, activities). I’ve never joined any group trips before, but this was very relaxed just having to book the trip and flight (and seeing various highlights without having to do the research).Posted on Oksana BolkinaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a really enjoyable trip to Madeira, despite the unusual weather and unexpected flight cancellations. The hikes were great (our guide Paulo just amazing), and the orga on the island was very good. I didn’t have to worry about anything, which is exactly what I wanted for this trip.Posted on Peder OlesenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I very much enjoyed the hikes in beautiful Madeira. The company was excellent, and our guide André was extremely knowledgeable and helpful throughout the week. If I had to point to anything that could be improved it'd be at the arrival at the apartments; it wasn't clear where luggage could be safely stored until check-in, so we needed to improvise a bit at that point. Also, the lock in the apartment door wasn't in the best condition. However, these very minor issues don't really subtract from what was overall a superb experience!Posted on samantha lambertTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My trip to Madeira was absolutely fantastic. I felt very safe with Andre as our guide, he was attentive and thoughtful, even adjusting some of the hikes to accommodate the group when the steep downhill sections proved challenging. The accommodation was great, especially the location, which was perfect for afternoon swims in the sea and easy access to restaurants in the evenings. I’d definitely consider booking again for a future adventure.Posted on Gillian OTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Had a fantastic time in Madeira, a really nice mix of hikes to see different parts of the island and the organisation was brilliant, loved it!Posted on Cesar izquierdoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Incredible experience in Madeira. Very well organized trip, professional guides, nice combination of hikes with different difficulty levels and varied landscapes. If you want and adventurous holiday with no worries about organizing it, try it!Posted on Karen AlgeoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Did the Moffat, Scotland trip lead by Gary and Tom. Had such a good time, gorgeous views and we got crazy lucky with the weather in September. The duo were super receptive and flexible to the group’s ability and morale, and were quick to think on their feet to adjust the itinerary to work better for us all. A lovely group of female hikers too. Would definitely book in again with them ❤️Posted on Maja De BritoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I joined the Scotland hiking trip. A top notch, 5-star experience from planning stage to saying goodbye with the group and the guides. Garry was immensly helpful with bits and pieces of information that made organising my traveling to Scotland and arriving to the meeting place a smooth and pleasant experience. Communication throught Whatsapp was effortless and always with a very quick reponse. I felt everything was taken care of, with a ready and helpful response for every inquiry or need. The hikes themselves were wonderful, both guides were very flexible and adapted to our level of fitness, but also our interests. Very grateful that we had the opportunity to see some off the beaten track routes. I have several food intolerances and this was never a limitation on this trip. There were always options, be it through the possibility of preparing my own food as well as having many choices eating out. I've been recommending their hikes to my friends and will definitely join for other destinations.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
