Your adventure begins as you arrive in Kyrgyzstan, where transport will be arranged to collect you from Bishkek and take you to the mountains. We recommend arriving the day before or early morning as the transfer to the mountains is quite long and it will start in the morning. It is however very scenic and well worth the journey. On the first day you’ll have time to settle in and it’s a great opportunity to meet your fellow adventurers. We can also recommend accommodation for the night before if you plan to arrive earlier.
Karakol will be the base for the whole trip, which is great because you don’t need to carry all your stuff around and after a long day walking you know your warm shower and bed is awaiting you.

The Ak-Suu Arboretum hike is a peaceful and scenic route that begins in the village of Ak-Suu, just east of Karakol, and climbs into the rolling foothills of the Terskey Ala-Too range. It’s one of the most accessible trails in the region, combining quiet forest paths, alpine meadows, and open ridges with wide views of the surrounding peaks.
The trail starts near the Ak-Suu Arboretum, a small research forest that shelters spruce, birch, and poplar trees from across Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia. From there, a dirt path follows the edge of the forest before turning uphill into meadows dotted with wildflowers. The climb is steady but gentle, and as you gain height, the views expand toward the snow-capped ridges above the Ak-Suu Valley.
Higher up, the forest gives way to open grassland where horses graze and eagles circle in the wind. The air is cool and filled with the scent of pine, and on clear days you can see the white peaks of the Terskey Ala-Too rising above the treeline. The trail reaches a broad ridge that makes a perfect rest point before looping or returning the same way.
This hike offers a perfect balance between ease and beauty, making it ideal for a relaxed but rewarding mountain day near Karakol. It showcases the region’s natural diversity within a short drive, with forest shade, alpine flowers, and sweeping valley views all along one gentle trail.

The Zhashyl Lake hike is one of the most beautiful short mountain routes near Karakol, leading through forested slopes and alpine meadows to a bright turquoise lake tucked beneath the Terskey Ala-Too range. The name “Zhashyl” means “green” in Kyrgyz, a nod to the lake’s vivid color that changes with the shifting light.
The trail begins in the Karakol Gorge, about 30 minutes from Karakol, where a dirt road ends at the park gate. It follows the valley floor through spruce forest before turning onto a steady ascent beside a stream. Gradually the forest opens to grassy clearings scattered with wildflowers, with snowy peaks rising ahead. As you climb, the air grows cooler and thinner, and the path curves toward the glacial basin that holds the lake.
Zhashyl Lake sits in a quiet cirque surrounded by sheer rock walls and patches of lingering snow even in midsummer. The water glows emerald green when the sun breaks through the clouds, perfectly mirroring the peaks above. Most hikers rest on the grassy shore before descending the same way, watching the color of the lake shift as the light fades.
It’s an ideal outing for those based in Karakol who want a full mountain experience without camping or long travel. The mix of forest, meadow, and alpine lake scenery makes Zhashyl Lake one of the area’s most rewarding moderate hikes.

The Ala-Kul Viewpoint hike is one of the most spectacular single-day routes in the Terskey Ala-Too range, leading deep into the mountains above Karakol Gorge. It follows the same valley as the famous multi-day trek to Ala-Kul Lake but turns around at the high ridge where the first views of the lake appear — a demanding but unforgettable day hike.
The trail begins in the Karakol Gorge, about 30 minutes from town, following a forested track alongside the river. The early section winds through spruce trees and wooden bridges, passing herders’ huts and small clearings filled with wildflowers. Gradually the path steepens, climbing above the tree line into wide alpine meadows framed by snowy peaks.
The final ascent leads to the Ala-Kul viewpoint, at around 3,600 meters, where the turquoise surface of the lake glows far below in a glacial basin surrounded by jagged summits. The air is thin and cool, and the panorama stretches from the Terskey range to the distant ridge of the Djety-Oguz mountains. After a well-earned rest, hikers descend along the same route through the meadows and forest back to the trailhead.
Though it doesn’t reach the lake itself, this route captures its beauty without the need for overnight camping. With a mix of forest, alpine valley, and high-ridge scenery, the Ala-Kul Viewpoint hike offers one of the finest full-day mountain experiences accessible from Karakol.

With a free day in and around Karakol, there’s a wide range of things to see and experience, from mountain scenery to local culture. In town, you can explore the wooden Russian Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Dungan Mosque, both beautifully crafted examples of Karakol’s multicultural past. The local bazaar is lively and full of color, with stalls selling fresh produce, handmade felt goods, and traditional foods like dried fruit, honey, and local cheese. The Karakol Historical Museum offers an interesting look at the region’s explorers and early mountaineers.
Those wanting something a bit different can ride horses into the surrounding hills, visit a yurt camp to learn about nomadic life, or drive along the southern shore of Issyk-Kul Lake to explore Skazka Canyon, a landscape of red sandstone formations and open desert views. Back in Karakol, the town’s cafés and guesthouses are great places to unwind, meet travelers, and enjoy classic Kyrgyz and Central Asian food.
Karakol’s charm lies in how much variety surrounds it — culture, hiking, lakes, and hot springs all within easy reach, making it one of the most rewarding bases in Kyrgyzstan for a single unplanned day.

The Kashka Su Peak hike is a classic Karakol ascent that rewards effort with sweeping views over the Terskey Ala-Too range, the forested valleys around Karakol, and the distant blue of Issyk-Kul Lake. It’s one of the area’s best summit hikes for those seeking a tough but accessible day in the high mountains.
The trail starts near the Kashka Su Sanatorium, about 25 minutes from Karakol by road. From the trailhead, a dirt track leads through dense spruce forest, where the air is cool and filled with the sound of rushing streams. As the trees thin, the path climbs onto open slopes lined with alpine flowers and scattered boulders. The ascent grows steeper near the ridge, where the ground turns rocky and the views open wide across the valley.
Reaching the summit of Kashka Su Peak (around 3,700 m) feels like standing on the roof of the Issyk-Kul region. To the south, the sharp white ridges of the Terskey range rise in a continuous chain; to the north, the immense blue surface of Issyk-Kul shimmers below. It’s a stunning place to rest, with eagles circling above and the scent of pine drifting up from the valley.
The descent follows the same route, offering new perspectives as the light changes over the mountains. While the trail is straightforward, the altitude and sustained climb make it demanding. For well-prepared hikers, Kashka Su Peak delivers one of the most complete and rewarding mountain days in the Karakol region.

The Jyrgalan Valley hike offers one of the most scenic and peaceful day routes in eastern Kyrgyzstan. Centered around the small village of Jyrgalan, about one hour east of Karakol, the trail leads through wide alpine pastures, wildflower meadows, and ridges with views of the snow-capped Terskey Ala-Too mountains. It’s an ideal introduction to the region’s open landscapes and nomadic atmosphere.
The trail starts on the edge of Jyrgalan Village, a former mining settlement turned mountain hub. It follows a dirt path along a stream before gradually climbing into rolling hills. As you gain elevation, the valley spreads out below, dotted with grazing horses and summer yurts. The higher slopes are covered in alpine flowers from late spring through autumn, and eagles can often be seen circling above.
At the top of the ridge, the view opens wide across the Jyrgalan basin, with snow peaks lining the horizon and deep green valleys dropping away on both sides. It’s a perfect place to rest and take in the silence before descending the same way. The return route passes meadows and forest patches where shepherds tend their flocks.
The trail is non-technical and well-suited to hikers of moderate fitness. Its combination of space, solitude, and mountain beauty makes the Jyrgalan Valley hike one of the most rewarding single-day walks in the Issyk-Kul region.

It’s time to pack your bags and move onwards. We arrange transport back to the airport so you can catch your flight home or continue to explore this majestical island. It’s best to book your flights for the following day or late evening as one again it’s a long trip back to Bishkek. We have lots of recommendations if you’re going to spend more time in Kyrgyzstan.
As you leave Karakol behind, you’ll take with you memories of dramatic peaks, glacial lakes, and unforgettable adventures in one of Central Asia’s most breathtaking landscapes. Until next time!

EXCELLENT Based on 44 reviews Posted on Maja De BritoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I joined the Scotland hiking trip. A top notch, 5-star experience from planning stage to saying goodbye with the group and the guides. Garry was immensly helpful with bits and pieces of information that made organising my traveling to Scotland and arriving to the meeting place a smooth and pleasant experience. Communication throught Whatsapp was effortless and always with a very quick reponse. I felt everything was taken care of, with a ready and helpful response for every inquiry or need. The hikes themselves were wonderful, both guides were very flexible and adapted to our level of fitness, but also our interests. Very grateful that we had the opportunity to see some off the beaten track routes. I have several food intolerances and this was never a limitation on this trip. There were always options, be it through the possibility of preparing my own food as well as having many choices eating out. I've been recommending their hikes to my friends and will definitely join for other destinations.Posted on AlinTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had an incredible experience with this hiking tour company in Montenegro, which I found through Instagram. The itinerary was clear and well-planned, with no last-minute changes—everything ran smoothly. Our guide, Vera, was fantastic. She not only supported us throughout the hike but also helped with local touring advice and even assisted in booking activities with local guides. Her knowledge and kindness made a big difference. The tour was conducted in a sustainable and budget-friendly way, without compromising on quality. We also received great tips on local cuisine, places to explore, and shopping. I’m already planning my next hike with them. If you’re a hiking enthusiast looking for a trusted guide, this is the company to go with!Posted on Charlotte RobertsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It was honestly fantastic and the little additions like the meal with the driver and the local film at cinema Dede really added to the experience. Plus I was so lucky to have such a great group to share the experience with. I'd definitely look at another tour with Trailmates.Posted on Bty btyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had such a great time in Montenegro. I wanted to review this trip as my first experience of group travelling, it had been an incredible experience from start to finish, it was so well organised at every step with support provided when required. It was so nice to be in a group of like minded people making new connections even sharing accommodation which I was sceptical about in the beginning, but was totally comfortable from the start. Our guide Vera was incredible sharing so much information on the area always with a huge smile and encouragement when needed. As well as going the extra mile to help people organise out other activities outside of hiking such as spa treatments and water activities. The hikes themselves were incredible with stunning diverse scenery. Watching wildlife such as mountain goats was a personal highlight. The hikes were challenging with some small technical sections which made it more enjoyable. I would highly recommend this experience. Thank youPosted on Kylie SyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I’ve recently joined the Durmitor National Park hiking trip in Montenegro. As someone who enjoys exploring nature, but doesn’t know many people who are interested in doing so, I’m glad I found Trailmates Adventures, because I’m not comfortable hiking on my own on challenging routes. What I liked/went well: - I did not have to coordinate airport transfer on my own. I just had to arrive - The accommodation is close to the national park, supermarket, restaurants - Not having to bring my luggage around during the hikes - Option to have a private room for an additional cost. I also liked having a kitchen, especially the fridge, although I understand that it wasn’t initially the plan according to the description on the website - Our guide, Vera is a local and she shared with us some history and background of the places along the way. She also paced the hikes well and supported us on challenging points - Option to go rafting in the Tara River during the break - Meeting inspiring people from different backgrounds - Garry (Trailmates Adventures) is very responsive and helpful in the chats - Amazing views, mountain goats, dogs, swimming in the lake! What I underestimated and might help people who are similar to me: - For context, I mostly do strength training and short bursts of high intensity, and not a lot of endurance activities. My stamina definitely got challenged, but I managed to push myself to the summits in the end. I particularly found it difficult to hike down steeper, exposed declines due to fear and inexperience. I also did not know that there would be some light scrambling involved, but the former was more of the issue for me than the latter. Nevertheless, I was in a supportive and safe environment! - If you find that you’re too tired, you can always bail on going to the summit. I was just too stubborn to do that :D Overall, it was an eye opening experience for me, and I really enjoyed it! I’m looking forward to the next trip!Posted on Katie KissTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Hi Garry, Oh, I can not describe in words what a wonderful week I had in Montenegro! Thank you for the great organisation from the first moment till the last! The group has been so lovely, we had great fun every day, and Vera was truly amazing! She is a gem with her kind nature. She guided us through our highs and lows and assisted with activities for the day off! We all loved her! Our accommodation was great, and the lady communicated well and assisted with fresh towels, etc, whenever we needed. Thanks again for the experience, and I am looking forward to coming for another trip!Posted on HaweaberryTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I joined Trailmates Adventures for their hiking trip to Madeira and had an amazing experience. The hike selection was great, the organization smooth, and everything felt well thought through. What really made it special, though, were the people – such a fun and supportive group that turned the trip into something unforgettable.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
