Your Almaty
Hiking Itinerary

kazakhstan 7224338 1280

Your adventure begins as you arrive in Kazakhstan, where transport will be arranged to collect you from Almaty Airport and take you to the accommodation. On the first day you’ll have time to settle in and it’s a great opportunity to meet your fellow adventurers. We can also recommend accommodation for the night before if you plan to arrive earlier. Almaty will be the base for the whole trip, which is great because you don’t need to carry all your stuff around and after a long day walking you know your warm shower and bed is awaiting you.

Big Almaty Peak is one of the most popular and scenic climbs near the city, offering panoramic views of the Trans-Ili Alatau range and the brilliant turquoise waters of Big Almaty Lake far below. The trail combines moderate altitude gain with a true high-mountain feel, making it a rewarding full-day hike.

The route begins at the road near Big Almaty Lake, following a dirt track that winds gently uphill before steepening toward a rocky ridge. As you climb higher, the views expand in every direction, with pine forest giving way to alpine meadows and eventually to a barren, wind-shaped landscape above 3,000 meters.

The summit, at 3,680 meters, offers a sweeping 360-degree panorama across the snow peaks of the Tien Shan and down to the blue shimmer of the lake. On clear days, you can even glimpse the distant mountains of Kyrgyzstan to the south.

The descent follows the same route and takes about three hours. It’s best to start early for calm weather and clear light. While not technical, the thin air and steady incline make this a solid challenge — and one of the most rewarding viewpoints anywhere near Almaty.

This trail is one of the most loved routes near Almaty, combining lush forest paths, open alpine meadows, and sweeping ridge views that stretch across the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains. The hike links the broad Kok Zhailau Plateau with the striking rock formations known as the Three Brothers (Tri Brata), making it an ideal full-day outing close to the city.

The route usually begins from the Medeu or Prosveshchenets area, climbing gradually through birch and spruce forest. After about two hours, you emerge onto Kok Zhailau, a wide grassy plateau covered in wildflowers during summer and surrounded by gentle peaks. It’s a perfect place to rest and take in views of Almaty far below.

From the meadow, a steeper trail continues to the Three Brothers — a line of rocky outcrops that rise sharply above the ridge. The final section involves some short scrambles, but the reward is a dramatic viewpoint over the entire valley and toward Peak Kumbel and Talgar Pass in the distance.

The return follows the same route, or you can descend via an alternate path toward the Shymbulak side for variety. The combination of forest, meadow, and mountain panorama makes this one of the most complete and satisfying hikes near Almaty.

The Four Peaks Traverse is one of the most scenic and demanding ridge hikes in the Trans-Ili Alatau, linking Talgar Pass with the Medeu area through a high, panoramic route that crosses four summits. It’s a full-day adventure best suited to fit hikers comfortable with long alpine trails and some exposed sections.

The route begins at Talgar Pass, reached by cable car from Shymbulak, already above 3,000 meters. From the pass, the trail climbs steadily toward the first of the four summits, with sweeping views back to the glaciers of Talgar Peak and the deep valleys below. The ridge then continues undulating over Peak Kumbel, Three Brothers, and Kok Zhailau Plateau, offering almost continuous views across the mountains and down toward Almaty.

The landscape changes constantly — rocky ridgelines give way to flower-filled meadows and patches of spruce forest as you descend. By late afternoon, the trail drops into the forested slopes above Medeu, where you can end the hike near the lower cable car station.

This traverse captures the best of the region in one long day: high-altitude wilderness, open ridges, alpine air, and the satisfaction of walking all the way from the snow line back to the forest edge overlooking the city. It’s challenging, but one of the most rewarding hikes you can do in the Almaty mountains.

A free day in and around Almaty offers plenty of variety, from relaxing cultural visits to adventurous outings in the nearby mountains. You could start your morning by exploring the city’s heart — stroll through Panfilov Park and visit Zenkov Cathedral, a colorful wooden church built without nails. From there, wander the Green Bazaar to sample local fruits, nuts, and traditional Kazakh snacks, or stop by a café for strong coffee and a view of the snow peaks that frame the city.

If you’re after something more active, take the cable car up Kok Tobe Hill for panoramic views over Almaty and the Tien Shan mountains. There are small trails, art installations, and a few cafés at the top, making it a perfect half-day escape.

For a deeper look into Kazakh culture, the Central State Museum offers great exhibits on nomadic life and Silk Road history, while the Arasan Baths nearby are ideal for a traditional sauna and spa experience afterward.

Those wanting a touch of adventure could visit the Sunkar Falcon Center for an eagle demonstration, ride the cable car to Shymbulak ski resort for alpine views, or head out to the Charyn Canyon for a day of desert cliffs and red rock formations.

Almaty balances mountain energy and city charm perfectly, so whether you spend your day sipping tea in a leafy café or watching sunset from a viewpoint above town, it’s easy to feel both relaxed and inspired here.

The Butakov Waterfall hike is one of the most accessible and enjoyable day walks near Almaty, offering a mix of forest, mountain views, and a beautiful waterfall at the end. It’s perfect for a relaxed half-day outing that still feels far from the city.

The trail starts in the Butakovka Gorge, a short drive from the Medeu area, and follows a dirt road along a stream through cool pine forest. Gradually, the path narrows into a valley with wildflowers and open clearings, with occasional glimpses of snow-capped peaks above.

After about two hours, you’ll hear the sound of rushing water before arriving at the main waterfall, which cascades down a high rock face into a small pool. It’s a peaceful place to rest and have lunch surrounded by forest and mist from the falls.

You can continue a little farther upstream for extra viewpoints or simply enjoy the calm atmosphere before heading back along the same route. The hike is great in late spring and summer when the waterfall runs full and the valley is green, and it’s close enough to fit easily into a free afternoon from Almaty.

Valley of glaciers

The Valley of the Glaciers is one of the most spectacular day hikes near Almaty, leading deep into the upper Shymbulak area of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains. It’s a journey through alpine meadows, rocky ridges, and glacial streams, surrounded by towering peaks that hold snow well into summer.

The hike begins from the top of the Shymbulak cable car, already at high altitude, and follows a marked path that climbs gradually into a wide U-shaped valley. The scenery quickly becomes dramatic, with ice-fed rivers cutting through green slopes and the distant Talgar Peak rising above the horizon.

As you move farther into the valley, you pass moraines and small glacial lakes, with the sound of meltwater rushing beneath the rocks. The air is crisp and thin, and marmots often whistle from the boulder fields. You can continue as far as the glacier tongue at the head of the valley before turning back.

The return follows the same route, with wide views across the surrounding peaks. It’s a perfect high-mountain hike for a clear day, offering a sense of wilderness just an hour from the city — a place where Almaty’s skyline feels worlds away beneath the endless ice and sky.

Just got back from an amazing week in the Almaty mountains with Trailmates Adventures, and it honestly exceeded every expectation. Each day brought something completely different, from glacial valleys and alpine meadows to turquoise lakes and sweeping ridgelines that felt a world away from the city below. The organisation was perfect, with every transfer and pick-up arranged so I could simply enjoy the hikes and the group. Our guide was incredible, sharing stories about Kazakh culture, mountain life, and the region’s wildlife with a mix of passion and humour that made every walk come alive. The scenery changed constantly, from cool forests to rocky peaks and open sky, and the sense of space was unforgettable. The free day was just as special. I took the cable car to Kok Tobe, explored local markets, and relaxed in a café watching the mountains glow at sunset. If you’re looking for a trip that combines adventure, organisation, and genuine connection to place, this is the one to choose.
