Laguna Verde

The hike to Laguna Verde from Laguna Tinquilco is one of the most beautiful and accessible day hikes in Huerquehue National Park, leading to a pristine emerald lake surrounded by ancient Araucaria forest and volcanic peaks. Starting from the shores of Laguna Tinquilco, the trail enters dense temperate rainforest, where towering coigüe and lenga trees filter the sunlight and the air feels cool and deeply alive. Wooden boardwalks and soft forest paths wind steadily upward, with birdsong and the occasional glimpse of smaller lakes hinting at the landscape ahead.

As the climb continues, the forest opens gradually, revealing clearer views of the surrounding mountains and the distinctive silhouettes of Araucaria trees, some over a thousand years old. The trail passes several scenic lagoons along the way, each with its own character, before reaching Laguna Verde, whose clear turquoise-green waters reflect the forested slopes and distant volcanic terrain. The stillness of the lake, broken only by gentle ripples and wind in the trees, creates a sense of calm that defines this part of the Araucanía.

After spending time at the shoreline, most hikers return along the same trail to Laguna Tinquilco, retracing the route through the ancient forest. The hike is moderately demanding but never technical, making it ideal for a full-day adventure immersed in one of Chile’s most unique ecosystems. On clear days, it’s among the most memorable hikes in the Lake District, combining volcanic scenery, ancient forest, and the quiet beauty of Patagonia’s northern edge.

Mirador Glaciar Voipir

📏 12 km ⏱️ 5–6 h ⬆️ ~900 m 💪 ●●●○○ — Moderate

The hike to Mirador Glaciar Voipir is one of the most spectacular and lesser-known routes in Huerquehue National Park, offering a rare close-up view of one of the park’s hidden glaciers. Starting from the Los Lagos trail network, the route climbs steadily through ancient Araucaria forest, where towering monkey puzzle trees rise above moss-covered ground and filtered sunlight illuminates the quiet understory. Occasional clearings reveal distant volcanoes and forested valleys, hinting at the high alpine terrain ahead.

As you gain elevation, the forest begins to thin, giving way to rocky slopes, low alpine vegetation, and expansive views across the Andes. The glacier appears suddenly, spilling down between dark volcanic rock walls into a small, ice-dotted lake below. Its fractured blue surface contrasts sharply with the surrounding terrain, while waterfalls and meltwater streams trace bright lines through the valley. The scale of the glacier and the silence of the landscape create a powerful sense of remoteness.

Most hikers return the same way, descending back through the Araucaria forest toward the lakes below. The route is demanding but non-technical, best suited for experienced hikers comfortable with sustained elevation gain. On clear days, Mirador Glaciar Voipir offers one of the most unforgettable viewpoints in Huerquehue — a hidden corner of the park where ancient forest meets ice and high mountain wilderness.

Villarica Volcano

Click for Route Map :
📏 9 km ⏱️ 6-8 h ⬆️ ~1400 m 💪 ●●●●○ — Challenging

The hike on Volcán Villarrica is one of Chile’s most iconic alpine adventures, leading to the summit of one of South America’s most active volcanoes. Starting from the upper slopes of the ski area above Pucón, the route ascends steadily across volcanic terrain, where dark rock and snowfields create a stark contrast against the wide sky. Early on, expansive views open over Lake Villarrica, the forests of the Lake District, and neighboring volcanoes rising along the Andean spine.

As you climb higher, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic and exposed. Snow and ice dominate much of the upper mountain, and the slope steepens toward the summit cone. The scale of the volcano becomes fully apparent, with sweeping views in every direction — endless forests, deep blue lakes, and distant peaks stretching across southern Chile and Argentina. Near the top, the crater reveals itself, often venting steam and carrying the sharp scent of sulfur, a reminder of the mountain’s constant activity.

Most climbers descend the same route, often sliding sections of the snow under controlled conditions. While the climb is non-technical with proper equipment and guidance, it is physically demanding and requires good weather. On a clear day, standing at the summit of Volcán Villarrica is one of the most unforgettable experiences in the region — a rare chance to stand atop a living volcano and take in the full scale of Chile’s Lake District.

Pucon Hot Springs

Pucón is a great place to enjoy a rest day without hiking, with plenty to do at a slower pace. Playa Grande, the main beach in town, has black volcanic sand and clear views of Volcán Villarrica, and it’s a perfect place to swim in summer, rent a kayak or paddleboard, or simply relax by the water. The lakeside promenade is ideal for a coffee or sunset stroll, while the town itself is pleasant to explore, with cafés, small shops, and a relaxed mountain atmosphere centered around the lake and main square.

One of the best ways to unwind is by visiting the natural hot springs in the surrounding forest, such as Termas Geométricas, Los Pozones, or Huife, where warm pools sit among trees and rivers. If you have a car, you can also visit nearby waterfalls like Ojos del Caburgua or drive to Lago Caburgua for beautiful scenery with minimal effort. For something more active without hiking, Pucón is known for rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, and paragliding, all offering a different way to experience the lakes, rivers, and volcanic landscape of the region.

Volcán Quetrupillán

Click for Route Map :
📏 16 km ⏱️ 5-7 h ⬆️ ~1100 m 💪 ●●●○○ — Moderate

The hike on Volcán Quetrupillán is one of the most remote and rewarding volcanic routes in Chile’s Lake District, offering vast open terrain and sweeping views of the surrounding Andes. Starting from the trailhead in Villarrica National Park, the route climbs gradually through dense forest before emerging onto wide volcanic slopes, where snowfields and dark lava rock stretch toward the summit. Early views open toward nearby volcanoes and the deep green valleys below, giving a sense of the scale and isolation of the landscape.

As you gain elevation, the terrain becomes more alpine and exposed, with long snow-covered slopes leading toward the broad summit plateau. From the top, the views are extraordinary, with Volcán Villarrica rising prominently nearby and Lanín visible on clear days across the Argentine border. Unlike Villarrica, Quetrupillán’s summit is wide and quiet, without an active crater, creating a peaceful and expansive atmosphere high above the forest.

The descent follows the same route back down, often allowing for faster travel across the snow. While the climb is non-technical in good conditions, it is physically demanding and requires navigation skills and proper equipment. For those seeking a quieter volcanic ascent with equally dramatic views, Volcán Quetrupillán offers one of the most memorable alpine experiences in the region.

Santuario El Cañi

Click for Route Map :
📏 16 km ⏱️ 6–8 h ⬆️ ~1200 m 💪 ●●●●○ — Challenging

The hike to the summit of Santuario El Cañi is one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the Pucón region, leading through ancient Araucaria forest to sweeping views of volcanoes and alpine lakes. Starting from the sanctuary entrance, the trail climbs steadily through dense temperate forest, where towering monkey puzzle trees, moss-covered trunks, and filtered light create a quiet and timeless atmosphere. Wooden steps and well-marked paths help guide the ascent as the forest gradually begins to thin.

Higher up, the landscape opens into alpine terrain dotted with small lakes and clusters of ancient Araucarias shaped by wind and weather. As you approach the summit ridge, the views expand dramatically, revealing Volcán Villarrica, Lanín, and Quetrupillán rising above endless forest. From the top, the perspective stretches across the entire Lake District, with volcanic peaks, valleys, and glacial lakes spread in every direction.

Most hikers return along the same route, descending back through the forest to the trailhead. The climb is physically demanding but non-technical, making it ideal for a full-day adventure. On clear days, Santuario El Cañi offers one of the finest viewpoints near Pucón — a unique combination of ancient forest, alpine scenery, and panoramic volcanic views.
