Getaway in CAPE VERDE

Your Adventure, Day by Day

Your SANTO ANTAO
Hiking Itinerary

ponta

Your adventure begins as you arrive in Cape Verde, where transport will be arranged to collect you from Sao Vicente Airport to take you to the ferry and then on to the accommodation. On the first day you’ll have time to settle in and it’s a great opportunity to meet your fellow adventurers. We can also recommend accommodation for the night before if you plan to arrive earlier. Ponta do Sol will be the base for the whole trip, which is great because you don’t need to carry all your stuff around and after a long day walking you know your warm shower and bed is awaiting you.

cova

Distance – 11km, Elevation – 1100m, Time – 5 Hours

The Cova Crater hike on Santo Antão is one of Cape Verde’s most memorable trails, beginning at the rim of a vast volcanic caldera high in the mountains. Inside the crater, farmers cultivate maize, beans, and vegetables in the rich volcanic soil, creating a patchwork of fields surrounded by steep green walls. From here, the path skirts the crater’s edge before plunging down a dramatic descent into the Paúl Valley, often described as the island’s most beautiful. The trail winds past terraced hillsides, sugarcane fields, and groves of papaya and banana, with local villages tucked into the slopes. Along the way, the views stretch across deep gorges toward the shimmering Atlantic far below, constantly reminding you of the island’s rugged character. Though not especially long, the steep descent can be tough on the legs, but the changing landscapes and vibrant local life make this hike an unforgettable journey from mountain to ocean.

The Ponta do Sol to Cruzinha coastal trek is often considered the most spectacular hike in Cape Verde, tracing a rugged path along Santo Antão’s dramatic northern coastline. Starting from the colourful fishing town of Ponta do Sol, the trail winds out of the village and onto cliffside paths that hang high above the Atlantic. The scenery is breathtaking throughout, with waves crashing far below, terraced hills rising steeply above, and small hamlets clinging to the slopes. Stone-paved sections lead you through traditional villages like Fontainhas, often called one of the most beautiful villages in the world, where pastel houses perch impossibly on the mountainside. Continuing along the coast, the trail passes banana groves, sugarcane terraces, and secluded coves before finally descending into the quiet fishing settlement of Cruzinha. It is a long day out, with steady climbs and descents, but the mix of wild coastal panoramas and authentic village life makes it one of the most unforgettable hikes not only in Cape Verde but anywhere in the Atlantic.

ban

Distance – 10,5km, Elevation – 400m, Time – 4,5 Hours

The Banana Valley hike in Santo Antão offers a gentler but equally rewarding experience, showcasing the island’s lush, agricultural heart. Beginning in the Paúl Valley, often described as the greenest and most fertile valley in Cape Verde, the trail meanders through a patchwork of terraced fields where sugarcane, papaya, mango, and, of course, bananas grow in abundance. The path passes through small villages where locals tend their crops and greet walkers with warm smiles, giving the hike an authentic, lived-in feel. Unlike the more dramatic coastal or crater treks, this route immerses you in the everyday rhythms of valley life, with fragrant tropical fruit trees overhead and the sound of running water from irrigation channels. The walk is moderate, with some steady climbs but nothing too demanding, making it perfect for a more relaxed day or as a complement to longer treks. The sheer vibrancy of the valley, with its bright greenery set against towering volcanic ridges, makes the Banana Valley hike one of the most charming and memorable on Santo Antão.

A free day in Santo Antão without hiking is a chance to slow down and soak up the island’s rhythm of life. You could spend the morning wandering through the colourful fishing town of Ponta do Sol, watching boats come and go from the harbour and sampling fresh catch at a seaside café. For a taste of local culture, visit the small markets where island-grown coffee, sugarcane grogue, and tropical fruit are sold by friendly vendors. If relaxation calls, make your way to Tarrafal de Monte Trigo, a remote black-sand beach framed by volcanic cliffs and one of the island’s most beautiful spots for swimming and fresh seafood. Another option is to take a scenic drive through the mountains, stopping in villages like Fontainhas or Paul to enjoy the views and try homemade food in a family-run restaurant. In the afternoon, you might tour a grogue distillery to see how the island’s famous sugarcane spirit is made, ending the day with a glass in hand as the sun sets over the ocean.

The Pico da Cruz hike is one of the most rewarding trails on Santo Antão, leading to a summit that offers some of the island’s most expansive views. Starting from the upper mountain roads above the Paúl Valley, the trail climbs steadily through terraced fields and small hamlets where daily life unfolds much as it has for generations. As you ascend, the path winds through eucalyptus and pine forest before breaking out onto open ridgelines. From the summit of Pico da Cruz, the panorama is breathtaking: to one side the fertile Paúl Valley drops steeply toward the Atlantic, and to the other stretch endless volcanic ridges fading into the horizon. On clear days, you can see as far as São Vicente across the water. The hike is moderately challenging, with steady climbs but no technical sections, making it accessible to most fit walkers. Combining cultural encounters, mountain scenery, and vast ocean views, Pico da Cruz is a perfect choice for those wanting a true taste of Santo Antão’s highland character.

The Alto Mira to Chã de Morte hike showcases the wilder, less-visited side of Santo Antão, where jagged ridges and deep gorges carve the landscape into dramatic canyonlands. Beginning in the small farming community of Alto Mira, the trail climbs steadily past terraced fields of maize and beans before reaching the high ridgelines that define the island’s rugged west. From here, the scenery is vast and untamed, with volcanic cliffs plunging into ravines and winding paths clinging to the slopes. The route then descends into the isolated settlement of Chã de Morte, where life feels far removed from the coast and time seems to stand still. Along the way, you pass scattered hamlets, friendly locals, and sweeping views of the Atlantic pounding against distant cliffs. This hike is moderately demanding, with steep climbs and descents, but it rewards you with some of the most dramatic and authentic landscapes in Cape Verde. For hikers looking to go beyond the famous valleys and coastal trails, Alto Mira to Chã de Morte offers a true taste of Santo Antão’s wild heart.

I’ve just returned from a hiking trip in Santo Antão with Trailmates Adventures and it was unforgettable. Each day’s walk showed off a completely different side of the island, from dramatic cliffside paths and deep green valleys to tiny mountain villages where life hasn’t changed for centuries. Everything was organised so smoothly, from the airport transfer on São Vicente to the daily pick-ups and drop-offs, which made it easy to relax and enjoy the experience. Our local guide was fantastic, pointing out plants, traditions, and hidden spots I’d never have noticed on my own, and the small group atmosphere made it feel friendly and fun. On the free day I explored Ponta do Sol and spent time by the ocean, which was the perfect balance after the mountain trails. For anyone looking for an active holiday in a place that still feels raw and authentic, Santo Antão is something really special.
