The Pliegue Tumbado hike is often described as one of the hidden gems of El Chaltén, offering sweeping views of Patagonia’s most famous peaks without the crowds of the more popular trails. Starting just outside the town, the path winds gradually uphill through lenga forest, where the trees provide shelter and the ground is often carpeted with moss and wildflowers in summer. As you climb higher, the forest gives way to open meadows filled with hardy alpine plants, and the vast Patagonian steppe begins to appear behind you. The final section is a steady push across scree and open slopes, with the wind almost always a companion, but the effort is richly rewarded. From the summit ridge, you get an extraordinary panoramic view: Fitz Roy’s jagged spires dominate the skyline, Cerro Torre rises dramatically to the west, and below you stretch glacial valleys, shimmering lakes, and endless plains rolling toward the horizon. Unlike some other hikes in the area, Pliegue Tumbado feels expansive and varied, with scenery that changes throughout the day and a sense of scale that reminds you just how immense Patagonia really is. For hikers looking for a challenging but accessible full-day trek with unforgettable vistas, this trail is hard to beat.

The Laguna Torre hike is one of the classic trails of El Chaltén, leading to a breathtaking glacial lake at the foot of the legendary Cerro Torre. Unlike some of the steeper treks in the area, this trail has only gentle elevation changes, making it accessible to most hikers while still delivering unforgettable scenery. From the very first stretch, the views open wide across the Río Fitz Roy valley, with the sharp spire of Cerro Torre often visible in the distance, luring you forward. The path meanders through lenga forest and along riverbanks, with frequent lookout points over hanging glaciers and cascading streams. After several hours, the trail emerges at Laguna Torre, a stark and beautiful lake often dotted with floating icebergs calved from the glacier at its far end. Towering above it all are the sheer granite walls of Cerro Torre and its surrounding peaks, which on clear days are reflected in the icy waters below. The sense of arrival here is unforgettable, and many hikers linger on the rocky shore to take in the scale and silence of Patagonia at its wildest. The return journey follows the same route, but the changing light and shifting views make it feel like an entirely new experience. For those wanting a full-day hike without extreme difficulty, Laguna Torre offers some of the most iconic landscapes in Argentina.

The Laguna de los Tres hike is the most iconic trail in El Chaltén and often considered the crown jewel of Argentine Patagonia. Beginning on forested paths that wind steadily upwards through the Río Blanco valley, the route offers an ever-changing mix of landscapes, from lenga and ñire woodlands to open alpine meadows alive with wildflowers in summer. Along the way, hikers are treated to spectacular viewpoints, including Mirador del Fitz Roy, where the jagged granite spires of Mount Fitz Roy first come into full view. The trail continues gradually until the final ascent, a steep, rocky climb that tests the legs but builds anticipation with every step. Cresting the ridge reveals the dazzling sight of Laguna de los Tres, a glacial lake of brilliant turquoise set beneath the towering face of Fitz Roy and its surrounding peaks. On clear days, the reflection of the mountain in the water is nothing short of unforgettable, while in wilder weather the drama of Patagonia is on full display. Many hikers pause here for a long rest, soaking in the view or even exploring nearby Laguna Sucia for another angle on the massif. Though it is a demanding full-day hike, the combination of varied terrain, constant scenery, and a world-famous finale makes Laguna de los Tres a true bucket-list adventure and a highlight of any trip to Patagonia.
A chance to explore the town, rest your legs, or set out on another adventure. El Chaltén, nestled in the heart of Los Glaciares National Park, is a lively little village surrounded by some of Patagonia’s most dramatic peaks. Between hikes, you can wander its laid-back streets, stopping at bakeries, cafés, and craft beer bars where trekkers gather to share stories while Fitz Roy glows in the distance at sunset. The town also makes a perfect base for small discoveries on your rest days, with short trails leading straight from the streets to waterfalls and viewpoints without the need for a full expedition. For those wanting to experience more of the region, a day trip to the Perito Moreno Glacier is unforgettable. Watching massive chunks of ice calve into the turquoise waters of Lago Argentino is one of Patagonia’s most awe-inspiring sights, and it adds another dimension to a trip already full of adventure. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or one more taste of the wild, El Chaltén offers the right mix of comfort, character, and access to nature.

The Lagoa do Fogo hike is one of the most memorable experiences on São Miguel, leading to a volcanic crater lake that feels untouched and wild. The trail begins with a steady climb through green slopes and quiet forests, gradually opening up to sweeping views of the island’s rugged interior. As you ascend, the air grows cooler and the scenery more dramatic, until suddenly the vast bowl of the crater comes into view, with the deep-blue waters of Lagoa do Fogo shimmering below. The descent to the shoreline reveals a tranquil world of black sand beaches and quiet coves, where the only sounds are wind and water. This is a moderately challenging hike that rewards the effort with a sense of remoteness rarely found on such a small island. On clear days, you can see across to the ocean, while misty weather adds an otherworldly atmosphere. Lagoa do Fogo perfectly captures the wild and elemental beauty that makes the Azores such a unique hiking destination.

The Faial da Terra hike is a journey into one of São Miguel’s most enchanting valleys, where dense forest, waterfalls, and a sense of timelessness make every step feel special. The trail begins in the small fishing village of Faial da Terra and winds gently upward through lush greenery, with ferns and moss-covered stone walls lining the path. Before long you arrive at Salto do Prego, a beautiful waterfall cascading into a cool pool that invites you to pause and take in the sound of rushing water. Continuing on, the route passes through Sanguinho, an abandoned village slowly being reclaimed by nature, its stone houses adding a touch of mystery to the walk. The circular path eventually loops back to the village, giving the hike a satisfying sense of discovery and return. It is a moderate walk in length and difficulty, making it accessible but still full of variety. More than just a hike, Faial da Terra feels like a step back in time into the heart of the Azores.
